Engine Vent- Late Tiger

Post by Lionel Champ »

Hi all,
I was about to fit the engine vent to the engine hatch when I noticed that the 16mm- M3 hexhead screw (as mentioned in the instructions ) that fit the vent were too short to fit a nut on. This technically is not too challenging for me to remedy, but I want the vent to look authentic and this gives me the opportunity to make it so. The only problem is that I don't know what it is suppose to look like. Does the vent really have six hexhead bolts holding it in place and are they the right scale? Also, the vent covers a rectangular hole. What should you see if you looked down the hole on the real Tiger? (Don't say the engine!)
Any pictures ,drawings or comments are much appreciated.
Thank you all in advance,
Lionel

Hello Lionel

I did a quick look through some books and so far this is what I found.

As far as the bolts go, I have seen both hex head style and the square bolts used. Someone else may know if one is for late Tiger vs. Mid/early. Maybe this photo will help with the scale question.

Under the front grill is the radiator box and under the rear are the fans.

I tried to find an actual photo but this is all I found in my quick search. Here's a link to some photos of the engine compartmet of the Late Tiger at Saumur and you can see into the radiator box. Looks like the fuel tanks form a ramp sort of thing to help air flow into the radiators. http://tiger1.info/saumur/mayb/maybf.html

Hope it helps

I am not sure but I think it is this one you ask about Lionel:

I think the photo says it all.

Tim:
The sloped surface seen under the air intake grills are wooden planks covering the fuel tanks and protect them from debris and shrapnel’s.
This was a Late Tiger feature and as they are well visible I will try to have them on my Tiger.

Hope this helped

I only posted this question late last night and it has been answered within a few hours. What a great forum we have.
Thank you Tim and Kent. The bolt heads do appear smaller at first glance and they are surrounded by tubing on the shafts. The photo's also show more plugs set into the deck plate than I realised. From the drawings, that must be part of the air filter showing through the retangular hole? The wooden planks are news to me as well, but they are visible and easly replicated (I hope).
Thanks again guys,
Lionel

My mistake

Great info on the splinter guards Colin! Site and info will come in handy when the late Tiger build progresses.

Good luck with the build Lionel.

Brilliant! This topic has the pictures I was going to need regarding the position of the hatch stop, perfectly photographed, and a very useful reference for some thing that does not feature much in the books etc that I have looked at, so thanks for them!

This Tiger has the snorkel cover fitted to the rear plate on the engine deck but I think that for it to wade the rectangular plate/cover would have to be removed and a flate plate bolted down tight to make a water tight seal. On the early Tigers it was necessary to remove the tubes from the fiffel air cleaners and the air intake pipe assembly that bolted onto the engine deck, then fit a blanking plate and the snorkel. Some tanks carried the blanking plate on the deck beside the turret. Perhaps by the late Tiger the wading capability was abandoned.

Someone can no doubt fill in the detail on this.

My post on the toggles for the water tight seal on the MG ball may help you here.
