Track "climbing" and track shape/damage

Hi,

I've got "vintage" tracks and had bad last few drives with track climbing. I'm following this post viewtopic.php?f=6&t=7118&hilit=track+br ... 375#p64593 , by Christoffer Ahlfors, and I think the main cause is alignment.

Should the highlighted bits in the photo below just be square or worth rounding off to reduce chance of climbing?

I think some damage that I might as least try and smooth out.

Hi Sam, that square section which looks out of place on the rounded part of the casting was an early mistake ( highlighted in blue) and needs filing to the same profile as the rounded/angled piece, it will then run lovely, the sprocket teeth should slip into the part that you have highlighted without any filing.
I wouldn't even try to run the tank until those rounded sections are blended in or you WILL do some damage! It will take some time to file each one, and really the tracks need to be disassembled to profile each in turn, unless you are good with a dremmel.

It's just a matter of taking the time as Phil writes.
I did not dismantle the tracks but hang up the complete track and just work from top to bottom

If you do not change it you will experience this.

Thanks Phil and Steen,

I did file off the opposite side, to the one Phil pointed out in blue, early on as looked really wrong. I didn't know it was worth doing the other side too.

It has been running fine, as far as I can tell, for a few years. Just this last couple of times gone wrong, I think because of the main sprocket being out.

I'll definitely work on the "blue bumps" before putting it all back together.

All good advice, just one other thing to help it all run sweet....just take the edges off the sprocket teeth so that the tooth can enter that square slot that you highlighted in the track.
The early tracks and sprockets can be a bugger but once you have got it right they work just fine, keep an eye on the "witness marks" as you start to run the ol girl, these shinny tell tail areas will help you bed the sprocket in. If you paint the tracks with say, matt black the "witness marks" will really show up.

Thanks again all,

Seems to be much better now. Although my son crashed it into a park fence and smashed a track link...

I think it was mainly the sprocket alignment that was just correct, previously, through chance. Not looked at the "witness marks" on the new paint yet.
