Hi Graham,
I've found only a picture in "Ahtung Panzer n°3" but I think it's of no help.
Tomorrow I'll scan it to send you (my scanner does not work).
I think this odd thing is too on the left of the middle line to get the gun balanced during the work.

TO ALL WHO REPLIED
I have done some research and just looks as if it maybe a lifting hook.

But why it appears to be let into the base I do not know.

Found a pic where the whole rectangular plate and ring is missing, doesn't look like it would support much weight. Looks more like an access hatch. No idea what the ring would be good for though.

I can email the pic if anyone want's it.

After looking at your picture it definitly looks like a hole under where the ring plate bit fits and looking again at the turret lifting photo perhaps the 2nd sling from the right is not far enough forward to hook into the ring?

I've taken this picture

form page 51 in "Achtung Panzer n°3.
I do not know what is the thing on the the barrel holding part not even if it's correlated to the ring.
As I wrote I think the picture is not useful, anyway...

Graham,
Youre right it is quite flimsy looking. And the recess is strange too. A good puzzler? Can our friend Kent Wiik help ID this part and function?

Don't know if this helps, but it appears all guns of this type have a similar plate. My guess is it is some sort of inspection plate for the gun recoil. The ring I think is just a handle to lift the plate out as it would be difficult to remove the plate without it.

Here is a picture, not very clear of the same plate on a Panzer III. Only one I have had time to find, but the plate appears on several line drawings and plans.

Mike
Could it be an oil reservoir to keep topped up for the recoil mechanism?

Hi Graham

That was my thought too. Oil or grease access point for the recoil mechanism.

So now we have a clear picture of the inside, its not a lifting hook, or an oiling point etc but adjusts something, but what?
I will just add a recessed plate and removal ring to my model.
