Places to visit while I'm in England!

Post by Marco Peter »

Hi all!

I'll stay in the UK from the 9th of november till the 21st, what places should I visit? We'll stay in Oxford.

This is my shortlist so far:

- Imperial War Museum London (revisit)
- Imperial War Museum Duxford
- Bovington Tank Museum (revisit)
- Armortek Factory

Maybe also visit Mark One tanks? Any other museums? Preferably tank-related? :-)

Can I visit the Wheatcroft Collection?

Unfortunately Cobbaton Combat Collection, Norfolk Tank Museum and the Muckleborough Collection are all closed as of the end of October.

There's the D Day Story Museum in Southsea (PO5 3NT) and the Castletown D-Day Museum in Portland (DT5 1BD).

No

It says on the website: "The collection is not open to the public. Due to the conditions under which the items are stored, public access is not possible, nor is there any infrastructure to to accommodate visits."

Adrian.

The American Cemetery near Oxford is worth the visit. Duxford is a must. Plan a whole day.

In Oxford are a number of great places... a very early Church with Moorish architecture... it was around in 1066... And old then!

Naturally, the Ashmoleon Museum and the smaller Scientific instruments museums in Oxford are great.

Blackwells Bookshop in Oxford is a must.

My favorite pub in the world is The Library in Oxford (I lived there briefly, that was my second home.). See if you can reserve the Snug. Unfortunately, the menu now sort of sucks... it used to be a hot menu with amazing curries... just the thing at 1am fueled by ales and working on patentable technologies c. 1998. Gad has it been 20 years? We came up with a lot of patents in that little snug...

Anyhoo...

If you get down to London... all the usual Tourist places are interesting. But my favorites are the Longitude Clocks at Greenwich, The Royal Navy Museum (go see the ships). The Science Museum, The London Transportation Museum and an off-the-wall place... The London Silver Vaults. Amazing place! The IWM London now, unfortunately, kind of sucks. Some may disagree, but the 'remake' took one of the world's finest museums of any kind and turned it into a politically-correct... well... waste of a day. Don't get me wrong... it still has lots of the artifacts. But now Duxford is the place to go... IWM London has sort of become a disappointment.

Also the Horse Guards museum is really cool. Doesn't take long. But a great collection and some neat artillery pieces on their parade grounds.

There are a million places to see in the UK... many in London. It is said that the man who is tired of London, is tired of living...

Next visit... I'll find even more amazing things to see and do.

Cheers,

RPR

I'll second these and the museums in Portsmouth... including the Victory and Nelson museums. The D-Day tapestries are cool, too!

Cheers,
