Rolls Royce Armour Car @ Haynes Museum
My Father-in-Law recently visited the Haynes Motor Museum at Sparkford, near Yeovil (UK), and sent me this picture:
I'll admit that I don't know much about the Rolls Royce 1914 Admiralty Pattern - I didn't even know one still existed ! So I'll have to make a visit - very, very soon ......

It is indeed a replica, a clever one, built up on a real chassis using that well-known armour plate, MDF. It does give a good feel for dimensions but it isn't the real deal. For that, it's Bovington in UK or Ireland (the Curragh, I believe).

There is at least one other replica, which is in the possession of the current Duke of Westminster. Whose father or grandfather organized one of the first squadrons in WW1. That replica was built in my workshops about 40 years ago. It is very identifiable because it is built on a Springfield Chassis! So it has Buffalo Hubs, not Dunlop hubs as the original Derby Chassis. But American Buffalo Wheel hubs... as used on Springfield chassis.
It's a neat replica as well.
There are also several cars that are running on ex-armoured car chassis. After the war, some were de-mobbed and then bodies were built on them... as on any other chassis. The Armoured Car engines had counterbalanced crankshafts (an extra 20 LBS of spinning weight) that added a lot of torque for moving armour. They will launch a nice light Alpine Eagle Torpedo Body like a rocket ship! We have rebuilt 3 of known surviving armoured car engines. They are very smooth... and very powerful!
For those who want to see an Armoured car chassis, there is a bare one at the Schlumpf Collection in France. It is one of the few Ghost bare chassis on display in EU. Also, a visit to The Hunt House, the RREC headquarters in Paulerspury... has a cutaway engine also done in our workshops. And there are a number of Ghost components and a tremendous amount of research material available for study.
The nice thing about RR... is that everything... has survived. Every scrap of paper, blueprint, note, drawing, prototype, photograph. It's all... extant. For those who want to go the extra mile(s) on their model... the resources available are amazing! Much of it at The Hunt House or the RREC HQ in the USA.
