Thin Leather question

Post by Derek Attree »

Hi Guys
I have been meaning to make the pads on the insides of the Comet hatches
and I was wondering if anyone has any idea where I can get some
soft thin brown leather from to cover them.

The wife wont let me cut up her handbag :D :D :D

Derek hi. Not a direct answer to your question but an alternative, if you don't find what you need. For my Comet, and the Cent, I'm intending to make them using a heat sensitive modelling clay (CX5). The idea is to make the shapes, apply heat from a heat gun and press leather or fabric into them to leave the impression of leather. That way seems to me to be a lot easier than trying to fight with leather.

All the best.

Stephen

Stephen,

Elegant solution!

Would have G. Wingrove's disapproval, for sure!

Could this technique be applied to moulding a textured, but flexible, mantlet cover, rather than trying to stitch one up out of real fabric?

Lateral thinking on a frontal problem...

cheers, Fabrice

Derek far cheaper than replacing your wife’s handbag you can buy off cuts on evilbay thus saving a vast fortune on 5 or 6 replacements for the one you cut up, Have a look at this for starters http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1kg-SOFT-LEAT ... 257892b28c I bought some that was about .75mm thick, a lot of the off cuts are 2-3 mm thick, have a search you will find something useful for less than £10
