Dimensions for Tow Couplings

Post by Fabrice Le Roux »

Hi,
Request to Panther, JagdPanther, BergePanther owners.

I need to arrive at a one-size-fits-all dimension for working tow accessories to fit the jaws of the "Deckel-Mittelkupplung", the towing point on the rear plate. Specifically I need the internal width of the jaws, or between the bosses if you have added them.

There is some likely variation between the kit jaws and the various super-detailed examples people have created over the last few years. The published drawings also vary, and scaling up adds error. So, please, any actual off-model measurements would be handier than real-world 1:1 reference dimensions.

The pin should be 9.8mm dia to a 10mm dia hole, according to most drawings and publications.
The jaw gap dimension probably will fall between 17-20mm.

I can't measure my own kits.. as they have gone to new homes. :(
Many thanks to anyone who takes the trouble to measure and respond.

cheers, Fabrice

Hi Fabrice,

The gap between was in 1:1 120mm (20mm in 1:6). Please note the 25mm offset:

Sadly half of the text and photos in my saga has disappeared when the forum was upgraded.

The pin diam shall be 10mm in 1:6:

Hi Kent,

Many thanks for responding so promptly. Nice to hear from you. Hope you are keeping well.
Could you confirm that this is dimension is taken from your outstanding model and allows for the thickness of the bosses (bearings)?

I only ask because Trojca's drawings, scaled up to 1/6th show the width to the cheeks as 20mm, but 18mm between the bosses. As each modeller may have added unique thickness bosses, I think it wise to double check.

Hope "Mr Dremel" is being kept very busy!

Regards,
Fabrice

Hi Fabrice,

Due to other commitments in life Mr Dremel hasn't touch any Panther parts for more then a year now.
The spirit has gone partly due to the lost of our hobby friends Humpy and Mike S.
Hopefully some day in near future the spirit will be back, time will tell.

Yes, for once Trojca is correct. 20mm between the cheeks reduced to 18mm between the bosses.
That is the measure the Saumur BergePanther has and that rear engine hatch/towing device is a genuine WW2 one and not a postwar made one.

Kind regards
Kent
