List of Mk IV's being modelled

Post by IAN HINKS »

To avoid duplication of models maybe it is a good idea for people to post details of which tank they intend to base their model on in one place.

I am building 2025, A Battalion (1st) A for ARETHUSA, Commanded by Lt. Oldham.

For a female option I'd quite like to have a tank called Kathleen, for my mother, but it doesn't look like K Battalion named, or possessed, very many tanks :?

I guess I could just pick one which doesn't have a known name, and call her Kathleen.

A great idea Adrian. When historic records cannot help, then why not use poetic licence, especially for such a noble reason. Here's to your Mam, and K for Kathleen.

Hopefully no-one has yet opted for this.... but (when it gets here) I'd like to do Mk IV male number 4086 (1st battalion, A Company, 1 section)

As far as I can tell this tank had no name as such but was painted with callsign A1 forward of the sponsons. Despite some discussion around the net about confusion with 4066, my understanding is that 4086 was commanded by 2nd Lt Frank Mitchell at Villers Bretonneux on 24 April 1918 - allegedly the first tank on tank combat?

Apart from choosing a tank with such an accolade, Mitchell was born in St Peter Port, Guernsey, where I have lived for the past 25 years. It will be nice to display a model here with local interest.

Happy new year all

Kevin

Hi Kevin,
When Mark and Gil first announced the Mk IV WW1 tank I thought that certain tanks would become the WW1 "Wittmann" and the first tank on tank combat was one I expected to get mass produced. So I think it is great that this does not seem to have happened and I love the connection you have via your home Island Guernsey. I wonder if anyone will model one of the Female tanks present to accompany yours. In fact is anyone out there modelling a female at all? I am starting to wonder if I should have gone for a Female, but the connection between Lt. Oldham and the area, Bouchavesnes, in which my Great Uncle was killed the year before was too close to ignore. Look forward to seeing posts on your build. I still have not unpacked mine I am afraid.

Ian

I have to be honest, the "tank on tank" thing was pure fluke. I googled Mk IV tank, guernsey, and up popped references to Lt Mitchell and A1/4086.

Otherwise I would have gone for the fundraiser tank 130 "Nelson", after my lovely dog :D

Stephen White, in his impeccable Centurion build, champions the research aspect of this hobby. I'm starting to get where he's coming from.

All the best

Kevin
