Spare track bar

Post by Lionel Champ »

Hi,
I am planning on having spare track links attached to the lower front of my late Tiger. I know that the bars are available to buy, but I think that this is something I wish to make for myself. I am guessing that these were locally fabricated in base workshops and that there design and dimensions were varied. If I am wrong, please let me know and any help with the dimensions would be much apppreciated. I have 12 spare links and my Tiger will be from the Normandy campaign if that helps.
Thank you all,
Lionel

If you look over the recent thread "late tiger wheel camo" started by David Gray on 10 May in the Tiger I section of this forum there is a mention about these.

Some Tiger I's had these while others did not. These were made of bar stock or of pipe, and so even the method of attachment varied. Some carried more than Track Links too. All this variation depended on what company and platoon the Tank was assigned to, the date, and theater of operation.

With some luck you may come across a well detailed photo of the Tiger I you are modeling to help you with this. Certainly others on the forum can assist with advice as you request it. Incidentally, Kent Wiik noted I missed that detail on my Tiger, and now I can not sleep knowing this - so I do hope to fix it

I did'nt realise that they used pipe? That had'nt even occured to me. I have yet to decide the exact vehicle that I want to replicate so I guess that needs to be established before I think about the bar. It's back to scanning the photos for me. Thanks Martin, you've given me food for thought.

HI LIONEL:
Download - Mike Stannard's PDF files for the Tiger - contact at: toyrific@mindspring.com
Mike offers all the track link stowage for the Tiger I - 2 bar, flat bar, channel, and angle - I know you want to make your own - maybe this will help.
