Rememberance

Post by Armortek »

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Amen to the sentiment, I wear my poppy with pride and at 11.00 will pause to reflect on all the things we now have which would not have been if not for the selfless sacrifice of so many.

As we in America celebrate Veteran's Day tomorrow we pause to give thanks to those who sacrificed their future so that we could have a future lived in freedom. Although not a letter from the "Great War", I've always thought the following letter from Abraham Lincoln, written during our country's tragic Civil War, contained moving words that apply to any conflict and to the brave men/women and their families who've sacrificed so much thru the ages. To quote the letter:

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

God bless our veterans.

James
