Smoke Gun in Panther

Hi Colin,

Do you think that the lack of a projectile significantly reduced the recoil forces? I recall the JP had special clearence to us a black powder charge, rather than cordite. More smoke and less energy.

I completely accept that Newton's Laws apply, and that the recoil energy starts to develop from the moment of ignition. However due to the massive imbalance between the weight of the projectile, accelerated by the expanding gases, and the inertia of the gun tube and moving parts of the recoil mechanism, it appears that the recoil has barely begun before the projectile leaves the barrel and the muzzle blast expands (the muzzle brake further slowing the the recoil in the Panther). The greatest part of the recoil travel occurs after the projectile has left the barrel.

This clip is very informative in comparing the inertia between different barrel sizes. The lighter BMP cannon barrel, not surprisingly, demonstrates far greater recoil travel before the projectile exits, compared to the T90.

All very arcane stuff! Good to know that these settings can be adjusted to please everyone. We are just creating an illusion after all!

i would think so as their is no round up the spout that means a lot less pressure build up behind it all gas'es are going strait down the barroll nothing holding it back, does'ent the 88 mm gun use its muzzle brake for recoil ??

Colin,

Reaching the limits of my knowledge, but the firing of the blank works like a rocket. The expanding gases still push against the ambient pressure and drive the gun tube back. I assume not having a projectile accelerating up the barrel will reduce the work being done and hence the recoil. There must be a formula buried in ballistics textbooks or on the web for this.

However, not having a projectile might reduce the efficiency of the muzzle brake as the gases are not momentarily deflected into the vanes of the brake as the projectile passes through. The unobstructed gas goes out of all apertures equally.

Any way you look at this, blanks were fun as gunfire simulators, but not very practical, certainly indoors. A none-pyrotechnic alternative is a great step forward.

Hello all together,
here is the first video, or a story from Dietrich;s Panther main Gun!!! His Panther an my Jagpanther is the rearguard of the Heeresgruppe B from Remagen to Westerwald an the Tanks make a patrol and then comes a Sherman M4...
Sorry the Sherman was the first target, but in very smal time comes very much Shermans and the airforce and killed the panther... this is part2 of the film in a view weeks
I hope its not a problem for you, we ve schot down the sherman.
My jagdpanther is killed from a mine, the tracks are broken. reality!!!!
You see in the film very nice the new main Gun from Dietrich with the Smoke, i have seen it live, its very much more smoke as in the film!!!
