Extracting the torsion bars from the axles.

I'm starting the rebuild of an part-constructed Early Tiger and need to remove the torsion bars from the axles. Some have come out easily

, some have withstood a fair amount of abuse

Is there a knack to removing these things ?

I did wonder about heating the axle to loosen the fit but am concerned this might affect its durability

Yep some are what i call an Tight fit. This is due to the thread haveing a burr and when the torsion bar is fitted it jams in real good

Do not heat it.Just get The axle in a vice and wiggle it a bit and with a bit of time and brute force it will come out.

Hi Lee.

Does the torsion bar need to be protected from the vice jaws ?

I've tried it in a workmate, as it has wooden "jaws" but you can't put enough pressure on to stop the torsion bar moving

Hello Adrian

The only wat to get them out is to put the bar in the vice and clamp it as tight as possible. the down size is that there might be some damage to the shaft.That is why it has to be tight to stop it slipping. Good Luck.

Just had the nod from Mark that they're toast anyway, so I'll have another go without worrying about the bar itself.

Just to say that I bought a decent engineers vice last week and once the bars were clamped in that it was quite easy to tap the axles from the ends.

Mind you, some needed a much stronger "tap" than others

No signs of Loctite so it must simply have been the tightness of the fit that was keeping them in place.
