German Colors

G'day guys. I bought tamiya spray field grey but it looks green. Is it suppose to grey not greenish. Thee is a german grey. Should it be ts4?

There is Field grey 1 (which you have)

Firld grey is wrong. Good for uniforms.

I think correct color is RAL 7021 dunklegrau/schwarzgrau. In tamiya mini pots xf63. I think ts4 is the right one. Think they call it panzer grey or grrman grey.
I got some large aerosols made up for testing. Very dark but highlights up nicely. I think the tamiya will be lighter as made for mainly small models.

I'm experimenting on my 1/16 tiger.

Hi Ray,

Field grey was definately not used on AFVs, but don't panic.

You could avoid stripping the model by dint of airbrushing a preshading in black/very dark grey and then building up a modulated covering of grey. Out-of-the-bottle Pz Grey will look too dark on a model of this scale, but trying to reintroduce a little hint of blue (MIG do a wash for this) will shift the colour balance away from the green. Lastly, don't be downhearted, if I had a quid for every screw-up and boob I have made in my 45 years of modelmaking, I could pay for my Centurion and have change for chips.

Hi Ray , i have just painted the hull of my panzer 111 with tamiya xf63 german grey

and that looks fine ,look at page 8 on my build page

My advice and comments were based on recreating an early war single colour paint finish. Ray may well opt to go for disruptive cammo as you have. In which case pre-shading is still an option, but I agree the cammo will conceal the modulation, hence post-shading, pin washes etc will do a better job of bringing out the detail in that case. No point making a silk purse when a sow's ear will do.

G'day guys. Got the TS4. Much better. The TS4 is almost identical `to ironstone grey from the local hardware which is little more expensive, $4, but 3x the quantity than tamiya TS4.

I do'nt use the tamiya spray cans. Too small too expensive. I got my colors mixed in 400 ml spray cans. I use the tamiya xf pots for highlighting with the airbrush.

Field grey is intended to be used as the colour for German uniforms.
