Rich, I think your problem "I'm also logged into the gallery but show up as a guest." is simple to resolve. At the bottom left hand corner you have two view options, next to the phrase "Display mode" (see image below). You can select yourself, or "guest". (This option exists so you can check that your gallery appears correctly to guests.) Make sure you have clicked on your login name, and not "guest".
To create an album, if you cannot see the option, click on the top left hand small bar and arrow (as picture below). This brings up a sidebar with all the commands you need. FYI, I created my album as part of the "publishing pictures to the web" wizard that runs if you elect to use the "Windows XP" method to add items.
