Might be worth checking with your regular house insurance company - they might already be covering all your worldly possessions whether at home or out and about. For high value items they might want to have them specified and know their value.

We found that our bikes, contact lenses, cameras etc are all in as standard.

Nick,
I suppose it depends where your biggest concern/risk is (at home or travelling with model at shows etc).
If home is where your concern is, I think Steven is correct, start with your current homeowners insurance. They should be able to create an additional policy (or addendum to your home policy)for high value specialty items like tools and tank models. They would be less expensive than a third party insurer because you can insure your auto and home together and hopefully get a multi-policy discount. Generally home owners policys have a set $$ limit for replacement of items lost, stolen, or damaged in your home, and no coverage when travelling. So an $8000 single item may not be covered.

If travelling with model, or at shows, your auto insurance may cover you if the model is inside your vehicle if lost or damaged, but again probably not $8000 for the model value, and probably no coverage if you injure someone with it at a show. Then perhaps it would be best to have a policy specifically for that model irregardless where it is. This mayl be the most costly as well, the more places insurance coverage is given, the more risk, the more the policy will cost.

Perhaps a bit of flag waving, but joining the UK Tank Club gives 3rd Party Insurance which is specific to the cause of the liability, well worth the peace of mind. I have joined the local Model Boat Club with partly for this protection, also it is good to support other people.

I have my tank insured on my normal household contents, and covers me when I am using the model outside, or at a show etc. You must of course explain this to your insurers, so that your model is fully covered. My premium is much cheaper overall than having one household policy, and separate cover from Walker Midgley.

Nick - I presume you are aware that WM also provide the Public Liability insurance for the UKTC ?

They seem to have a few "club" insurance policies available, so I wonder if it would be worth enquiring as to whether they would entertain a "club rate" theft policy for large scale tanks as well as their PL insurance.

Hello....I use Walker Midgley...and spoke to them direct to clarify the type of cover I needed. I transport my Comet on a motor cycle trailer to various shows. The insurance covers to/from shows and public liability. I have used other insurance brokers for my model boats and aircraft..... Walker Midgley cover large models etc, while being transported and in use.
I emailed the UK Tank Club, without reply...so I settled on WM...Mick

WM seem to price cover at £7.65 per £1000 of model value, so a Firefly at £4000 including motion pack would be £30.60 per year to insure.

Hi Nick and all.
Yes I use Walker Midgley as well.It is quite expensive though when you have got a few tanks. As expensive as insuring a car per year.My house insurance people would not insure and I tried several brokers who were unable to find another company for such a specialist product.
