Panzerkampwagen IV commander

Post by Tim Bowman »

Hi everyone

Started on the commander. This tank will represent a platoon leader's tank from 2nd platoon, 6th company of 12SS fighting in Normandy between June and August so I wanted him to have a "veteran" look but not an old man. His rank and shoulder boards will be added/corrected. A few more headsculpts arriving this week so might try some others too.

Hello Tim

Love the head sculpt. Is it a Tony Burton one?

Outstanding commander  !

He looks so real, fantastic work my friend.
Those eyes are just amazing.

One tiny thing... hope you haven’t painted the numbers yet.
12SS in Normandy (and during the rest of the war) used a bit odd numbering.
To confuse the enemy and not showing what tank the zug commander had they never used #1 as the third number.
According to Zetterling 12SS in Normandy had 22 PzIV/company divided in 4 Zug of 5 + 2 staff tanks.
Staff PzIV had number *03 and *04
And the zug began with **5 to **9

For example 6th company looked like this:
Staff: 603, 604
1 Zug: 615, 616, 617, 618, 619
2 Zug: 625, 626, 627, 628, 629
3 Zug: 635, 636, 637, 638, 639
4 Zug: 645, 646, 647, 648, 649

Hope I didn’t mess things up now...
Looking forward to see more of your breathtaking PzIV while finished.

Kind regards
Kent

Hi Guys

Thanks for the nice comments.

Kent, thank you for the correction. Explains my confusion on why many of the photos of the unit are XX5 panzers. So.... Tactical number switched to # 615 and I'll paint them on soon.
