Painting cables

Post by John Fitzsimons »

I was wondering if anybady has advice on painting the tow cables. Primer or other treatment. Somthing to dull down the bright shiney look.

Hello John,

I used tamiya metalic grey for my tow cables, i didnt
use primer, but i think it is better to use primer first.

Hello John,

I use Instant Rust in combination with Tamiya red brown. Gives the cable a very realistic rusty look.

Thanks guys,

I ask because I painted some 1/16 before and I could always see some shiney clean metal in the crevices. I might try some weathering with vinegar or something. Have some spare cable so will experiment. If any body has experience let me know.

John,

I did some experimenting myself. Used hydrochloric acid(10%) to speed up the "wheatering", put it in the ground like they do with "genuine" German Helmets but the Instant Rust gives the best and the fastest result. Tried vinegar aswell, but the Armortek materials used are to good..., it won't rust.

Hi fellas.

Going back a long time to the original forum if memory serves me Vince had a good idea of using a blow torch on the cables this dulls them instantly and also makes them malleable into the bargain, once done leave them as they are to natuarally weather or paint as you wish ... one way or the other the shiny silver is gone forever.

Hi Guys

I used that technique and it really does work, only thing to remember is the cables have a very thin string running through the centre of them, and that sets on fire when you do it. So just do it outside and you wont set the fire alarms off like I did
