Tiger refurbishment

Post by Tony Thompson »

Hello

I have just refurbished one side with all bearings in the wheels, idler and drive sprocket now complete, the gearing is fine with just a little tlc required etc..

I have painted all the wheels on one side with light weathering and a slight to heavy mud/dust effect. The Tamiya textured light mud paint is really quite good, looks natural when dried etc.
Please excuse the photography as the flash tends to give the paint a sheen but in natural light it is a matt finish.

I am quite pleased with the end result, so far..

regards Tony

Hi Tony

Nice to see your Tiger refurbishing progress. Wheels look good. Are you planning on repainting the whole model? Any particular unit or vehicle?

Keep the photos coming please.

Kind regards
Tim

Hello Tim

Thanks for your reply, I do intend to re-paint the whole tank, I am basing it on the 101st SS panzer battalion.
It will be number 331, 3rd company as the 3rd used mid tigers with the light placed in the middle etc.

I have used these photo's to copy the camo scheme with a more large or wide type of camo paint work etc..
I have enhanced the photo's on my computer then blown them up, you can make out the different shades on the pixillation of the three colours, I then drew around all the different outlines to give the paint plan etc..
printed them off then laminated them so that I have good photo's to work from..

I'll be doing the other side shortly before I start the deck, turret and sides etc..

These are the original photo's..

Hi Tony

I'm a complete dummy. I see your images of 331 now. Before they were only showing the photobucket"image deleted" message to me. :?

One of my favorite Tiger 1 photos! 8) Look forward to following your project.

All the best from California

Hi, Tony!

It is looking very good! Your idler looks much better than mine. Did you modify yours with regards to shape and, if so, how?

Cheers,
/Chris

Hello Chris

I have not modified them, I spoke to Lee Sellers who built this tiger originally and they are standard idlers etc..

Change of mind

Post by Tony Thompson »

Hello

Hmm, change of plan, liked the colour without the camo that I thought that I would change to another unit, not 100% but most probably the 508th Heavy Panzer Battalion in Italy..

Fits with colour, mid tiger, same wheels, cupola, light placement and zim etc..

I have been busy lately, still got some bit's and bob's to finish on the hull and deck but it's coming on nicely..

regards Tony.

Some detail work..

Hello

I have added some of my recent paint work, almost finished now.. still have the loaders hatch, MG mount and the jack mount to build and paint..
just keep seeing things to add on.. so kind of ongoing etc.

I ended up basing it on a the 508th heavy tank battalion, second company tiger.. again slightly rusty with a dusty mucky finish etc..

Regards Tony.

Nice to see another Italian campaign Tiger. I'm building a Tiger from the 3. Kompanie / schwere Panzer-Abteilung 508. This unit had some Tigers with an antenna on the right side turret for remote controlled Borgward vehicles. A must have book is the "Combat History of schwere Panzer-Abteilung 508". Nice paint job on your Tiger. I could be wrong, but I don't recall seeing a 508 Tiger with tracks mounted to the front hull. Anyway, keep up the good work!

Hello Rich

Thanks for the kind remarks, I did have some photo's of the 508th with the tiger showing tracks on the front hull.. but I can't find it!

I remember reading about the extra antenna/aerial on the right side for the 3rd company tigers only..

Kind regards Tony.
