Benedini sounds
Hello Chaps
Just an idea i have had. It would be nice to have the sounds on the TBS5 card that we want and not the ones allready on that do not apply to the vehical. i would like to see the sound card programmed up as follows
1 Engine crank but not not starting
2 Engine crank and starting
3 Turret traverse
4 Main gun fire
5 Machine gun
6 Voice "turret left"
7 Voice "turret right"
8 Voice "Enemy sited"
9 Voice " Fire"
10 Voice "enemy distroyed"
These will be in the realavant languages.
Please post your thoughts below.

Hi Lee,
Have you ever considered using an embedded MP3 player like this for your own voice recordings? It utilises a memory card for MP3 files that can be triggered individually. I've been looking at incorporating them in some animatronics.

Sounds like a simple and effective idea Lee.
I wonder if different forces used standard phrases for things ?
Also, is it possible to hear the turret traverse motor/mechanism ?
I know the HL Tigers etc make a noise when the turret is traversed but the tank turrets at TankFest seemed to turn without any appreciable noise.
I'm sure when I've talked to Thomas, that he mentioned a new TBS 5 module which would allow custom sounds to be uploaded in the same manner as his smaller modules.
Adrian.

Benedini has in its store also the TBS mini that have almost the same TBS5 functions except for bass and treble adjustment that must be done by the amplifier.
With this board and the USB cable you cn program each sound function on it. You can also use it to command outputs like lighting system (in flashing or continous modes) you can also use it to give a PWM signal (servo) .
I think you must consider it as the price is lower than tbs5 and the quality is almost the same.
The only thing is that you must use caution when connecting it to an amplifier not supplied by Benedini (just read the tbs mini manual).

Hello Lee, now that's what I call ' a good idea son', (older forum members will have heard that saying).
While attending the recent 'shows' I lost count of the number of times the switch is activated to reach the 'voice' messages. I stopped using it eventually....takes much to long.
The programme you suggest would be ideal, for displaying the sounds', they are a large part of the appeal with these models.
Very impressive.....Mick

Benedini sounds
Lee,
Good subject with some interesting responses. Some comments on possible sounds:
- Turret traverse. No point, with manual, electric or hydraulic systems, virtually no sound outside the vehicle.
- Hatches opening and closing, perhaps with an appropriate expletive if someone gets a finger caught?
- Breech block opening and closing: quite a loud clang, audible outside.
- Engine sounds, yes, especially cranking without starting.
Commands:
- Yes, these are normally standardised and vary between nations.
- German: most of them are in the Tiger Fibel or on the internet
- British: some examples:
~ "Driver advance; driver halt; left stick; right stick; driver reverse"
~ Gunnery - a typical engagement:
Cmdr: "Gunner, traverse steady left/right......ON.
Cmdr: HESH/SABOT/COAX tank/men on...."
Gunner: "On"
Loader: "Loaded"
Cmdr: "Fire"
Cmdr: "Target" (indicates a hit)
Cmdr: "Target Stop"
General:
Cmdr: "Where the **** are we?" "What about a brew?"
USA:
You'd expect our US allies to find a short and elegant solution. My only experience of US tank gunnery went something like this:
"Big gun, black bullet. In the toob. It's on its way. It's a homer. Stop, next sucker right...."
Australia:
Having spent some time with 1st Australian Armoured Regiment, I'm full of admiration for the way they do things but I couldn't possibly print it on a public forum. Perhaps Dale or one of our Aussie friends could publish a sanitised version?
Perhaps we might get some input from our other European colleagues?
Regards
Stephen

I would like reloading sound after firing main gun.
Adrian, i have an upgraded 1/16 tiger. Sound from a unot called elmod. It has a manual turret rotation sound when engine not running. Turret could be hand cranked. The beauty of elmod is you can add any sound file. Add music also. Sound files on mini sd card. Pity it's not compatable with the big tanks. I can send you some video if you like.
Not to bothered about Voice commands from the sound system (prefer mechanical sounds) although I like Syms idea about seperate module for the animatronics. Phease go into production on that. Plug and play version would be great.
Another range of sounds could be track squeeks brakes grinding to hault and gear change which I get from the elmod.

Hi
I once recorded sound for museums, and I seem to remember in the distance past, recording English (Brummie, I think!), tank commander giving various commands in a Sherman tank, in Normandy, I will see if I still have the original tapes.
I have a lot of sound kit, including a digital sound recorder.
So if anyone has particular sounds they want recording and, more importantly access to the particular vehicle they want the sounds off/from I can travel to most locations on the UK mainland!
I can mix any number of sounds together, including expletives !
Hatches opening and closing are sometimes easier and sound 'more real' when recorded as a sound effect, as used by Foley operators in the film industry.
The files I record are in the .wav format, and are very high quality, but are large files. I can, at a later date change them to mp3 or other formats to suit your application.
I have a colleague who has a small sound recording studio, where they record voice overs for corporate videos. He uses local and uk based actors to produce his voice overs, I'm sure I can tag a bit on the end of a recording session, to record a set of commands in a variety of accents, I would just need a selection written down (via email), actors like to work to a script, they find it difficult to speak otherwise! Apologies to any actors on the forum.
As I only work part time these days and the summer is usually quiet, this would be the best time to do any location recording
.
I would not charge for any of the above, especially if it involved recording real live green machines. I know it's sad but we all have to have a hobby?
.
Let me know your thoughts.
Regards
John

Benedini's TBS mini doesn't need to send back the unit to be programmed. You can do your personal sound set and program it directly to the board.
It has almost the same features of the "bigger" and "older" tbs5 in a lower space and price.
Sound quality is the same. (22kHz) 8bit mono.
It has proportional engine sound, starting and stopping.
Special sounds and sound linked outputs to add leds or other things (5V output)
2 sounds (one engine and one special) can be played at the same time (no engine silence during "gun fire" for example
Sound sets ready to be downloaded are avaiable on Benedini download page for free, so, you don't need to program all things.
The board programming software is simple to use, it lets you test all sounds, all outputs with the board connected to the USB.
On my halftrack I putted 3 german voices (one is an Hitler radio transmission) plus anti aircraft warning horn and it pilots the wiper system plus the lights all in only one channel.

Hello Chaps
We are going off topic again. The idea was to have these sounds on the TBS5 sound card as standard. Allready programmed in. Not as Mp3 files or on the benedini mini card.
We have to keep the sounds down to 10. Obvoiusly these would be better to operate with an encoder. But also can be programmed up the usual way on stick or rotary switch.
Im just thinking that the cards are programmed up by Thomas specifically for Armortek so our models are a bit more bespoke. The sound card system isn't cheap but value for money. As we are all want a bit more special.
Ie on the Tiger sound card there is a sound of a tree falling over. Who uses that sound?

I replaced sounds for my tiger (TBS5) by sending the board to Thomas Benedini.
I installed on it the soundset of bovington tiger (it sounds really good now). It is possible to send to Thomas the sounds you want (and their position order) but upgrading the TBS5 needs the shipping of the board plus the chip upgrade. It will costs a bit more.
Here you can listen the new engine sound of bovington tiger, sorry for the quality, volume was too high, played indoor and not a good quality camera.
There are a lot of features more, there are sounds for missed starting and more.
I tried loading the same sounds on tbs mini and worked at the same way. The quality was different only because I used a low price amplifier (40W) on the mini board istead of the 100Wx2 on the tiger.

In few words create a "standard" armortek sound sets that are installed by default in the tbs5 only for armortek tanks.
It is a good point.
