Tiger road wheels

Post by Paul Butler »

Happy new year everone!

Can anyone advise wether epoxy adhesive as recommended, is best for sticking the rubber tyres on. I read it years ago but can't find the reference.
I'm not the longest builder of a tiger but it's close!

Hello Paul

The best thing to use is Loctite 480 Which is a rubberised superglue.

I used Araldite Rapid epoxy two years ago when I did mine and they have stuck well and not come loose at all despite heavy use. Just a thin layer of glue though.

Hi Everyone,

Still on the topic of Road wheels.
Having looked at Stinch's Web site, is there anyone making the brass lock washers for the hub nuts and bolts?
The thought of learning etching puts me off.
I've Emailed him but no reply as yet so I ask the forum.

Paul,

They are not individual lock washers, they consist of a thin plate of material which fits under a pair of bolts/nuts with a tab at each end to lock the nut or bolt head. There are three per wheel. To be quite honest they are difficult to see on the full size tank and a lot of work for almost hidden detail.

I made my own out of .005" brass. I made a template out of cardboard and then cut them out of the brass with a pair of scissors. It gets a little tedius making 48 of them but worth it. Here is a picture showing how they look, and Allan is right they are hard to see but they do add that extra detail. I'll find a picture that shows them unpainted so you can get a better idea of how they look.

Mike,

Clearly a lot of work done on these wheels. Unfortunately during the build I missed having to set the hubs into the wheels and can't bring myself to do all this rework now the models is completed. Its amazing how much detail stuff has come out on the Tiger.

Allan,

Thankyou for the information and I take you're point.
However seeing Mikes wheels I'm tempted!
To see a photo was a bonus, thanks Mike.

Here is a picture showing them unpainted, they look a little rough here but when painted you can't tell.

And here is a newer, better picture of it painted

Allan I had my wheels completed (so I thought) but took them apart again and had them modified by Pete Fertl, who did an excellent job on them.
Having the hubs recessed makes a big difference in its appearance, highly recommended.
