Prototype Restoration

Post by Adrian Harris »

Today was quite a milestone, as I managed to get the major component parts back into some semblance of a tank :D

Image

After working on the individual parts for so long, I'd forgotten how big these things are when they're complete

The room is a tip and I don't have the energy to tidy up, so I let Photoshop take the strain

Adrian,
She is looking really nice again, like a new model. Hard to believe that is the old rusty prototype. The bogey wheels appear to have deeper spokes? Were they different than the production model? Perhaps they look different since they are stripped pf old paint and cleaned!

Good to give her a new second life. Good to see another Sherman post, its been a while. All the best,
Bob

It is. I am amazed at how well the parts have survived.

The wheels were machined, rather than cast, so the edges of the spokes are much more sharply defined. You can see a close up in my gallery here:

It would be good to see more of the Sherman's here - there were a good number sold in the production run. Maybe they just don't need as much servicing as the Axis tanks

Adrian,
I missed the fact the wheels are different on the prototype. The deep fluted spokes look great! I also see that the track pin retaining block is a solid block, like the original vehicles, not a flat stamped piece as on the production kit. Also the prototype has slide pads on the suspension arms, something missing from the production kits. I spent a lot of time designing and fabricating this part for my model.

These are interesting differences that make your model unique from any other. I am excited to see it finished and back in running order.

Progress on my Sherman has been slow, but I agree we need some more action in this catagory.
Kind regards,
Bob
