Gun Barrel Recoil

Post by Antony Rowley »

Below is video of a 1/8 Leopard A4 with the best recoil action I've seen. It looks like a very complicated set up but I really like the quick initial recoil then the barrel slowly resets itself. Superb

It might give you some ideas  German engineering at it's best.

Thanks Antony

Yes that is really good. It is not that complicated, but who has all the equipment to make the parts. So I think Armortek should make an optional recoil system. Would be a great seller.
Here is another fine solution on a KT:

Antony,

This is great!

I wonder if there is a way to make it work with a blank?

Thanks,
Brian

We did try a gas recoil system in the early days of the firing device trials, Mark put together a cylinder and piston device with a large spring for the return connected directly to the barrel via a con rod after much trialing it was found to be a bit unstable, on detailed inspection it was found that it had deformed the cylinder with the extreme pressure and completly destroyed the spring.
The barrel assembly is a heavy unit and when travelling backwards at around 200mph it has gained a terrific terminal velocity which must be slowed and then stopped and then gracefully returned to the start position, it's all about allowing enough of the air or oil in front of the piston to be vented away or squeezed through vents or transfer ports to absorb the energy and so convert that energy (as friction ). into heat.
There's an awfull lot of RnD involved. I might have another go some time cheers phil

Actually, the more I study the setup in the Leopard, the more I wonder it we could use it?

If you wanted to simulate a "to scale" recoil the CAM used would, may have to allow for a recoil of as much as 2.75 to 3 inches. And, that CAM would have to be mounted in alignment with the barrel. Well, what happens when the gun is elevated or depressed?

I think the CAM would probably not have the space to rotate accept at about or around a level elevation????

This is a subject that comes up from time to time. The official line has to remain the same from Armortek. The blank firer was thoroughly tested and approved as a design prior to being offered for sale. One of the conditions of this approval was that the barrel had to be firmly and permanently fixed. No modification or adaption whatsoever is acceptable. This really is a very important safety issue.

If you take a look at one of the photos in the gallery, page no9, phil's pics page 3 photo 024 of the Tiger1 firing you can actually see the barrel as it begins travelling down range so you can appreciate why it must be fixed.
Phil adds, the photo of the Tiger1 with the barrel on it's way down range was a trial to demonstrate and so evaluate what might happen if the barrel was not fixed!

This is the reason that I didn't order the blank firer.
IMHO, an operating gun, must recoil so as to be totally realistic. So after my Panther is built, it will have no firing gun, until I can sort out, find or build, a recoil unit.
I'd personally, rather have a recoil on the gun, and a recorded sound effect of the actual firing.

Mee Too, Darryl. I don't really think too much of blank firing as even with a fixed barrel its still can have safety concerns and be costly to operate. I prefer an animated recoil with a timed sound-byte over the "pop" of a blank. The only aspect of blanks that I do like is the "whisp" of smoke - and I think that would be attainable without a blank, if I chose to pursue it - for the moment, I can let that go though.

The Leopard mechanism that started this thread, did not fire a blank, that was brought up within the thread.

I will say, that I wish Armortek offered an animated recoil option along side the blank-fire option as an alternate choice.

The shame is that this subject seems to replay itself over and over:

someone bring up the concept of an animated recoils....

another want to marry it with the blank firing crap....

Mark comment that blank firing crap must have fixed barrel...

and then the thread dies off....until it is brought up in new thread.

What fails to be seen or considered is that some of us are asking for an animated recoil, NOT having anything to do with BLANKS.
Thanks,

Jim

I agree with comments above that for realism the barrel has to recoil  .

Why does any blank firer have to attached to the barrel. Why can't it be free standing, either in the turret or is the main body of the tank :?:

I think this fly wheel version of the recoil is superb and could be added to the tanks with or without a blank firer.

Thanks Antony

Phil,

Not crap at all  I really love the smoke coming out of the barrel etc but see below as it would have been even more enhanced by recoil but then you'd loose the smoke :? Ah decisions :?: :?:

Fast forward to 1.58 to see a few real recoils in action.

Hi,

Here is my attempt at a recoil system with smoke.
Image

The main gun recoils on a cross head assembly you can see and the servo to the rear with the crank assembly is a sail winch servo, which rotates 360 degrees on a non proportional channel. In parallel with that servo is a second servo that depresses the button on the Maplins smoke aerosol whch is piped up to just short of the muzzle. Sound and flash (you can just see the flash wire also going up the barrel) come from the Tamiya sound system. The sound and flash on the Tamiya system activates from rapidly pulling the gun elevation stick back and I also manually flick the non proportional channel at the same time to get the recoil and smoke to work. With a bit of practice it is also possible to tweak reverse get the tank to jerk a little. It works well but there is not a bright flash or as much smoke as a blank, but it all comes without any pyros and the problems they bring.
