SS101 turret number colours

Post by Steve Norris »

Can anyone give me confirmation of the colours used for the turret numbers on SS101 vehicles in Normandy. I have seen colour drawings of 1 company using green with white boarders, 2 company using red with white boarders and 3 company using blue with yellow boarders.
I will probably be doing a 2 company vehicle (see previouse posts) but i also like the look of the 1 company vehicles with green turret numbers so i have not made a final decision yet.
Regards
Steve

Hi Steve

My limited research on the tactical number colors has led me to the same colors as yo describe for each company. As I am doing a 2 company vehicle as well, I'm glad you raised the question. Kent would have the answer for sure as he has studied the history of the second company very carefully. I'm all ears(or eyes) for the confimation of red with white outline.

Best regards
Tim

Hi Steve,

Yes the colours/company you describe are the correct ones.

At least that is the fact we know today but there are some doubts about the 1:st company.

However red outlined in white for the 2:nd there is no doubt about.
But during their road march to Normandy some of them can be seen with white numbers only but before arriving near Villers Bocage they got their red paint upon the white.

Cheers
Kent

Thanks Kent,
I am glad that you could confirm what i have read and seen.
I have narrowed my choice of Tiger markings down to either the early 211(see Tiger progress report) or 121 at Villers-Bocage.
Tim,
I think we could end up with a 1/6 scale 2nd company :D , lets make sure that we do not repeat any numbers.
I am at the camoflage stage now and am waiting for the snow to clear a bit so that i can buy some more paint, i will post an update photo soon.

Regards
Steve

Steve,
I'm looking forward to your paint job as well, as I too will be doing a Normandy Tiger 1 - Although mine will be Pz Abt 102. Good luck on the numbering, are you going to paint the numbers?

Robert,
The como stage is the part of the build i dread, Getting the right effect is not one of my strong points and i know that the painting can make or break a model. When i see some of the superb paint jobs people have done on their tanks i wonder if i could ever come close.
I will paint the numbers using masks that i hope to produce on my computer.
