Visit to Bovington Museum on 28th October

Post by Dennis Jones »

Took 12 year old grandson and wife to Bovington yesterday, we had complimentary tickets so saved a few bob (£28 in all). Live in Poole so only down the road. First time I've been since the £16m upgrade. Much better now as you can walk right around all the tanks. Also live demos going on outside in the arena. Awaiting delivery of my Panzer 3 kit (Nov hopefully). Took a load of photos of the Panzer as well as the one that is not complete. I expect everyone has got photos by now but if anybody wants a particular shot then let me know. Anyway a good day out bought a book on WW1 and WW11 tanks reduced from £9 to £4 will make interesting reading as I am relatively new to tanks, although I did build the Tamiya 1/16th scale radio control version with sounds etc a few years ago. Going to Model Engineering Exhbition at Sandown in Dec, does any body know if any 1/6th scale club will be there ?

Hi Dennis,

I went to the Tank Museum today with a friend. I also took lots of pictures, about 200, of the two Panzer IIIs. Also I'm waiting for my Panzer III in November as well :D

I also took some measurements of the return roller mounts, the Ausf N version was great to measure as it was missing the tracks.

Good day out.

Sarah

Hi Sarah, Sorry we missed you at the museum. I thought you had ordered a Tiger 1 ? I built a Tamiya King Tiger 1/16th radio controlled version a few years ago, still runs well. I have been building and racing 1/8th scale radio controlled model cars for about 20 odd years in UK and all over Europe but reactions are getting a bit slow now, so going for tanks instead. I am also building a 1" scale steam traction engine at the moment but that is quite a big project as you have to make and fabricate all the parts from scratch or castings. We also called in to the factory on the way back from Devon a couple weeks ago, took a couple of friends in as well Mark & Gill gave us a warm welcome. I also build full size kit cars.

Hi Dennis,

I have ordered the Tiger as well. I wanted a project to keep me busy over Winter, so I ordered the Panzer III as well. I don't know if it's another coincidence but when I visited Gill and mark a few weeks ago, a few people has just left, I went down on the 15th October. I've also been doing up an old Jeep.

Hi Sarah, As Gill says we must have missed you by a few minutes, pity that as we were in our kit cars, mine is a Morgan lookalike with a Rover
3.5 ltr V8 engine in it which I built in 2000 and has done 23000 miles since.
What jeep are you doing up ?

Hi Dennis,

Are you going to do much to your Panzer III, or build it straight put of the box? I've got lots of ideas for mine.

The Jeep is a 1957 Willys M38A1, Korea/Vietnam era. We are on the look out for a complementary trailer so we can take the tank(s) with us to the military vehicle events. We know a few guys who are German re-enactors, I'm sure they will look after the tanks in the day, then we can play with them when the public have gone.

Regards,

Sarah

Hi Sarah, Not sure yet, I am still learning about tanks and their variations.
I did get a few ideas from Bovington but until the kit arrives and I have a proper look at it we will see then. Have had a look at quite a few of the members Panzers and also some ideas off the Panzer111 part of the forum.
There are some clever blokes out there. I have a few people who live close by who I have met up with and they have a lot of info. There are 2 guys Vince Abbott and Robin Ellis, I have known Robin for quite a few years from model car racing, it was he who introduced me to Amortek. His Tiger 1 is something to see particularly the moving lifelike commander figure. Well, keep in touch and look forward to receiving the kit.
