I just received the HL230 P45 Engine ordered from John W. Goode, and it is worth the patient wait!
When I ordered this in Feb. 2008 I understood John was not planning to make these again.
I suggest we all not let him off the hook yet, contact him through his web site at <http://www.advancedarmour.com/> and pester him into doing it again. After all there will be King Tigers and other Tiger I's coming off the line, and they too will neeeeeed an Engine
I too just received my HL230 P45 Engine ordered from John in early 2008. As you said he wasn't going to make any more - but after bugging him with a few e-mails he agreed. I sure hope he keeps making these. I wish he would make engines for all the models.
It is a great conversation piece - not sure I want to put it into the Tiger - I think I will just leave it as is and let enquiring minds ask about it. Anyone interested should contact john. He has a few other interesting items in stock worth looking at.
Thanks gentlemen---very kind words. All the laser cut parts have been used up, the hours involved are astronomical & prohibitive, the materials too expensive (requiring upfront funds to procure them), the wait for the customer too long & there are still issues to be resolved with certain people who commissioned work & are being extremely difficult, a chain reaction of not the best circumstances aggravated by the occasional order that went out & no payment was ever received...
It's bound to happen, but in four to five years I delivered about 29 pieces which included both P30 (Panther) & P45 (Tiger) to every continent including China, Japan, Australia, Netherlands, all areas of Europe, South America, South Africa, Russia & the USA of course. Everyone has been very satisfied.
I do not operate a "factory" or a store, the engines are individually made sculpture art & an order was treated as a commission to produce an art piece.
In the future as time allows, I'll consider offering these again with many zinc castings instead of machinings. Bob Morey is my only local fellow Tank enthusiast, we get together now & then so we'll look into this over time I'm sure, some day. For now they are all sold & delivered & no further will be made of this method. It's been great to help out my fellow tankers with a few unique trinkets to marvel over, but I look forward to being just a simple Tank driver for while now!
thanks
John
Glad I have one too John! Well done on the whole project. I'm still amazed at the detail of mine and how you made them from all the hundreds of small alum. pieces glued together!
If you ever want to make some more engines -white metal or resin castings would be the way to go. It would still require a lot of work, but once molds are made a model can be duplicated fairly quickly.
I can definately understand not wanting to undertake anything at the moment though! Congratulations on the conclusion of a highly successful project!
Thanks Bob,
(Bob is one of the true masters of fabrication & casting)
only "some" of it was glued, the rest good old fashioned fasteners.
Yes a partially cast version would be nice, from zinc or something tougher than white metal. Resin is out. May even eventually see what it costs to die cast these. John
Id really wanted to see a HL230-P30 and with all the tiger2´s coming John you can massproduce them hihi.
So if youre planning to do some id also pay it upfront, as others would to i think.
I mailed you earlier this year and you said then there would be no more,
If you start again I will pay up front also, even the shipping.
All the best for the future.
http://www.Facebook.com/newthorpemodels Dont hit me so early in the morning with those negative waves.
Listen carefully i shall say this only once.
If its not broke dont fix it.
Ich Hatt Einen Kameraden
Firstly may I congratulate you on a superb model engine. As I have been spin casting metal parts for years I thought I would offer my advice here. Die-casting the parts would be very expensive due to the cost of the steel tooling required and unless you plan on producing thousands of parts it is not economical.
Casting the parts in Zinc cad would be the way to go. Zinc cad is very similar to white metal, but a little stronger, very close to die-cast metal. Problems with spin casting is there is a slight shrinkage, about 2%, depending on the heat of the metal, and this may effect the fitting to machined parts. White metal has about the same amount of shrinkage.
There are two main white metals for spin casting, one is good for large parts without a lot of fine detail, the other which I use for all my parts gives finer detail and ideal for static parts. If you consider using this I could cast a few sample parts for you. Just send me a couple of your machined parts and I will included them in my next mold.
I cannot at the moment spin cast Zinc cad as it cannot be used in the same pot as white metal and I only have one melting pot. I do plan on getting a second pot so I can cast Zinc cad. The main difference between Zinc cad and white metal is it's bending properties. White metal can only be bent once and it breaks, Zinc cad can be bent a couple of times before breaking. Other than that their appearance is much the same. Zinc cad is a little harder and good for very fine detail.
Did you forget about me already I am a tanker in your area At least when I am on leave. Maybe I can meet you and Bob both when I am home this time, say July 13th or 14th is open for me, what do you guys think?
You guys have set the bar really high for a novice like me, I hope you dont mind sharing some insider secrets.
Hi Jim,
I could be available for a get together in July, that would be great. I have one of John's engines as well if you want to see that. Let me know if you do come home on leave.
I don't consider much I do a "secret". Some manufacturing techniques like CAD design and CNC are very complicated so its hard to share the how-to's of those processes. Is like trying to teach someone Latin in a 15 minute lesson. Better to just share the end result.
My questions will be much more rudimentary than that. I am going to want to know about suff like, paint, prep, zimerit application and just listen to your experiences with assemble.
Looking forward to meeting you, I will be home in July for sure but only for a short time.
