Sound unit question.

Post by Steve Norris »

Has anybody fitted twin speakers to the Benedini sound unit with the new style enlarged amp ? If so how many ohms were the speakers and did you wire them in parrallel or series.
Regards
Steve

Hi steve,
The Benidini unit only produces sound in mono and sends this single channel to the amp, The amp then splits it into two, not true stereo, so your amp should have two outlets for the speakers, if there is only one connect both positives from the speakers to the pos side of your amp outlet and the same with the neg, i think i remember reading 4 ohm for the speakers.
clive.

Hi Steve,

Please be careful when connecting speakers parallel or in series.
When you connect speakers parallel, the total impedance will be reduced to half of the impedance of the individual speakers. So two speakers of 8 Ohm connected parallel will result in an overall impedance of 4 Ohm. The question is if the amplifier can take this lower resistance. When you turn up the volume it may get very hot and burn out in the end.
Connecting in series will double the overall impedance ( two 8 Ohm speakers result in 16 Ohm overall). This lowers the risk for the amplifier but will reduce the output level.

If there are only 2 wire connections for the speakers, most probably it is meant for serial connection.

I have conversed with Thomas Benedini by email about his sound systems - he is very kind and has always answered me back pretty quickly.

Not that the fellows are sterring you wrong, just that I always like to go right to the source when possible - never hurts.
Thanks,

Jim

Hi Jim,

The information I have given above is general theory for audio equipment.
Professional audio has been my trade for a couple of years
I have no knowledge about the components of the latest soundunit as supplied by Armortek. The amplifier may be from Benedini or from another source.

Ad and All,

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting your info was incorrect; I had/have lots of questions on my Panzer 3 build and have found Thomas to be a very good source to ask on this sound stuff - he really cares and is always looking to help folks out.

I apologize for any other interpretation. Best wishes.
Thanks,

Jim

Thanks guys for all the replies, I think i may stick with just one speaker for the moment and see (hear  ) how the system sounds.
