John -

There are actually two types of insurance to consider:

1.Public Liability.

This is ESSENTIAL if you want to run your tank(s) in public, whether at a display / event or just in the local park. It protects you from claims about hurting or damaging either people or property. There are two main providers - either Walter Midgely Brokers (direct, or via membership of the Southern Armour Group), or the British Model Flying Association (BMFA). Both cost around £30 pa. There’s more guidance about this, and running at public events in general, in the Knowledge Base.

2. Property Insurance.

A matter of personal choice. Difficult to get, and usually prohibitively expensive. It would be very difficult to prove the value of your tank - probably original purchase cost at best. And there might be unacceptable conditions about storage and frequency of use. Might be worth a chat with your house contents insurer and car insurer. But, personally, I’ve never bothered, and I don’t know anyone who does.

Hope this helps,

Chris

I believe that membership of any model engineering club can also provide you with public liability insurance, as long as they are affiliated to either the Federation of Model Engineering Societies or The Northern Association of Model Engineers. The club’s insurance extends to cover individual members’ own activities, and they have Certificates to be “signed off” and issued to members by the club Secretary. If you are a member of such a club it might be worth checking with them.

I don’t know, but it’s likely this is how Southern Armour Group provide cover, ie issuing members’ certificates off the back of their club policy. UK Tank Club used to do the same but I don’t know if they still do, or even what happened to them?

Insurance is a small world - these “schemes” are all managed now by Walker Midgely.

UKTC faced dwindling membership and poor turn outs to the shows that were organised, so at the last AGM it was decided to wind the club up and donate the remaining funds to charity. That was in 2020 or 2021 I think. There's still a FB group but it's UKTC in name only.
