It might sound like the B obvious, but when you fit the hasps, fit them under the bin lid lip and not on top. The bin steel is thick and will hamper the fit. It's not quite scale but a lot neater fit.

I'm not sure if the fittings can be soldered on. But I used small 0.5mm brass rivets to hold the hasp/ latch parts onto the bins with glue, giving a more robust fit than with just glue.
