On this day, 15 September, tanks went into battle for the first time in history.

And so, it began ……

And it will never end.....

It's also Battle of Britain Day for those who are air-minded.

Flers, 15th September, 1916. Photos from the 100th Anniversary Commemoration by the Royal Tank Regiment, successors to the Tank Corps of 1916.

The first tank across the start line at 5.15 am was D1, commanded by Captain HW Mortimore. He was to clear a German pocket on the flank of Delville Wood, which was a threat to the flank of the main attack, which was due to start 15 mins later. This photo shows the area of Mortimore's successful attack. His start line is to the left in the middle ground.
