Nick,
I think you need to be more specific. What are you using, if its aerosols then they are pretty straight forward, if its paint from a can with a spray gun then that is more difficult. If its shading and weathering with an air brush then that can be an art form!!
As a simple start if you are using a small spraygun I would thin the paint about 50-50 with thinners then practice spraying a piece of scrap material, varying the paint flow and air pressure untill you achieve good coverage without any runs. Start with about 30 psi air pressure. Move the spraygun at constant speed keeping the same distance from the work, start moving the gun before you start spraying paint.
