Quad rebuild

Bit the bullet and made a start today, the quad was in running order, but I enjoy stripping it back and making the build mine, so removed all the electronics and cables and will start with the chassis

Looking at the quad chassis with fresh eyes, as I did not build it, I thought the winch could be made more effective, first thing I discarded was the 3 armed cage, as it appears to do nothing and replace with a cable layer if that’s the right word, the two rear pulleys were raised approx 10mm, and the one on the right moved to the left to line up with the main drum, I still have to make the spindles for the rear pulleys.
Can someone explain what the rear tray is for, as it is not on any pictures of the quad, although there are brackets for wheel chocks

That tray looks suspiciously like somewhere you would store a spare wheel.

I've also never seen it on any actual vehicles.

Still working on the winch, the goal is to have a working winch cable from the front of the quad
I have moved the drawbar back and down and have made and fitted the side brackets that sit in the U of the chassis, both pulleys have been repositioned and have the correct bases, and fitted the crank to the cable guide

The challenge I had today was to get the winch cable to run along the chassis to the front, this needed the cable to change direction twice, and to fit under the equipment tray, still need to make some cable guides and the end rollers,

That’s another bit done, when I first tried to see if the quad would pull itself forward on the winch not much happened, the drum was slipping, anyway I should have checked the gearing first as the grub screw had not been fitted, second go it pulled it self forward, not bad as the motor and diffs were connected, just two more guide rollers for the chassis rail

Couple more pictures of the front roller guides, prototypical mount using the original fixing points took a bit of head scratching

Few bits done, made the last cable guides/rollers on the chassis, made the working attachment rings for the front, and made a pair of shackles

Nearly there to start on the body, front lights wired and working, might get all the electronics and smoker wired in first

Electronics in and working, had to cut down and shorten the loom as it was a bit of a birds nest
When you look at the back of a Quad you see the rear panel resting on the two V brackets, on the model the tops are hidden, so I cut and reprofiled the bottom edge and added a plate to the top of the V brackets, it now sits as it should
Knocked off the resin doors and made a start to replace with working metal ones, I will position all doors first then see what openings to cut

To do the modifications I would like to make I have had to take apart the body, the little dome head bolts that had been painted were a pain to remove
first thing I tackled was the inside of the door and door frame, looked like Meccano, replaced the nut and bolts with countersunk rivets, I also used a rivet it the centre hole on the door hinges, and 8ba nut and bolts on the remaining holes, once painted it should look a lot neater

Back from holiday, so on with the rebuild, replaced the nuts and bolts with rivets in the doors and frames, made the surrounds for door locks and filler caps from metal these will be riveted on,

Braved the heat in the shed and started on the rear doors, making the doors is quite easy, piercing the steel body took longer, will not rivet the doors until it is primed
