Hi guys,

I just installed the smoke unit and am a little disappointed at the amount of smoke being generated inside the tank. I am trying to think of ways to cover the rear area where the smoke system pipes are. I wanted to know what other people may have done and used to rectify this issue. I have already extended the piping but that didn’t help much. As always, your help and comments are greatly appreciated.

Do you mean the amount of smoke produced by the smoker, leaking from the piping, or blowing back into the tank ?

Hi Wael
On the Elefant the exhaust should exit through the lower hull panniers above road wheels 4 and 5 and not through the rear of the tank.

is it the amount of smoke or where the smoke exits your asking, these pictures show the layout i built and changed the rear exhaust exit to the side exits, and works fine, if its the amount of smoke produced its down to the fluid your useing and the amount, baby oil will smoke your house out,

It also depends on how much smoke you want.
Exhaust smoke is like weathering, less is more.
Big clouds of exhaust smoke from a museum piece started up maybe once a year and after multiple starting attempts is not realistic for a combat vehicle.
A bit of white smoke whilst starting and then a fine trail to simulate the heat haze afterwards would be way more more realistic.

Hello gentlemen,

It’s where the smoke exits the tank in the rear that is the problem. I I build the unit according to the instructions. It seems about 60% of the smoke exits the tank and the rest rises back up inside the tank. Why didn’t armortek run the piping like Chris Frys setup? I am using baby oil BTW. I don’t mind a little extra smoke but not inside the tank lol. What material is the white piping so that I can order more of it and rerun it like chris. Chris, do you have any video of your tank running with the smoke unit on? I would like to get a feel of how it looks while running. As alway, all you guys help is greatly appreciated.

Just to be clear, it’s blow back into the inside of the tank that is the issue.

The only way to stop blow back would be to seal or put a cover over any openings in the rear of the tank.

What about if I rerun the unit like Chris’s setup?

I'm sure I'll be ridiculed. but one idea I've tried in the past was to add a small low current draw 5 volt fan mounted on top of the main smoker fan, powered from the BEC supply, it runs constantly while the tank is switched on.
As long as the extra fan generates a gentle positive pressure it will prevent smoke leakage into the tank.
The downside there will be a small amount residual smoke blown from the exhaust after motor and smoker shuts down.
Upside over time no sticky oil residual, certainly worth it when it comes to smokey Chieftain.

Don’t the Elefant and Ferdinand have different exhaust layouts ?

John, no ridicule from me, I was thinking of 3 small fans to cover the rear opening.

Adrian, I thought the elefant and Ferdinand is the same thing, Ferdinand being the initial name. Please correct me if I’m wrong. I really do appreciate all the help

The Ferdinand and Elefant both had the same exhaust outlet positions ie above and between the 4th and 5th wheel positions in the sponson floor.

Thank you all for your help and input. Does anyone have a video showing the smoke coming out of the sponson floor? I checked YouTube but couldn’t find anything. Just trying to decide if it’s worth rerouting the piping.
