12 way encoder in an OpenTX transmitter

I managed to snaffle a cheap Taranis Q X7 transmitter from Ebay recently to play with and thought I'd try fitting an encoder into it.

I prefer push buttons myself, but these encoders are popular, so I'd see if I could get one to work with the Taranis, as I know they've been problematic in the past.

The work requires three switches to be removed, one of which will be returned but it gets in the way of the installation.

The three JST crimp connections for one of the rotary controls were extracted from the motherboard housing and new ones installed, which had been wired to the three way lead from the encoder.

A small amount of plastic has to be removed to allow the encoder to sit deep enough for the fixing nut to be installed. I used a Dremel and a small milling tool.

Once the switch and encoder had been fitted to the front face, the third switch was reinstalled and the case put back together again.

Input 5 was configured to use the encoder and Mixer 5 configured so it works on Output 5 on the receiver.

That was pretty much it, apart from reconfiguring the TBS Mini to work in encoder mode and calibrating it to the encoder.

Adrian, so glad you've cracked this, it's a major help in converting to Open TX. Although I managed the physical installation OK a year or so ago, I could never get the X9D TX to calibrate all the positions. It seemed to want only to recognise six, which I thought at the time was a limit in OpenTX. Looks as though you've found differently. A few of us will be beating a path to your door after this..... Thanks.

I've just swapped the encoder into a Taranis X9D Plus and with a bit of tweaking, it too works perfectly with the Audio Module.

Once he has a chance, Stephen is going to check out his X9D and see if the tweaks enable his to operate as expected.

Hi guys, It looks like i will now be getting a new 2019 Taranis X9D to replace my Spektrum.
I have fitted the Rotary Encoder to 2 Spektrums in the past using the excellent instructions on the forum.

Are there any instructions for installing and setting up the encoder on a Taranis?

Cheers
Tim

Hi all, I now have a Benedini rotary encoder and want to fit it to my Horus X10s Express which is running on Ethos.

Has anyone tried this before?

Adrian's info is the closest but still on a different TX and a different OS..

Cheers
Tim
