Derek,
I've tried a number of colours in the past and have never got a satisfactory result. I've even tried painting a basic wood colour brown in enamel and whilst still wet trying to drag a darker acryliic brown through it to get a grain effect but to no real avail. If you look at the pictures of my sherman tools in the SHerman section you will see that I have made wooden handles which was really relatively easy. These can then be oiled and varnished.

Derek the best colour that I have used to date is humbrol 110 natural wood . When dry give it a light dry brush . you will be very happy with it . Dale

Hello Derek
I upgrade them to real wood. All you do is stain them.
