Armortek

Can someone do me a favour, time the turret rotation (360 degs) on the Tiger I with the more recent lazy suzanne ball bearing system? Much appreciated, thanks!!

Surely the turret rotation speed will depend on the speed of the motor or the hand of the gunner ( I recall reading it was 720 turns of the handwheel to turn the turret 360 on the tiger.) Everything else will just affect how much the motor or gunner has to work.

Thanks Mark. I’m after the speed at which Armortek’s Tiger I turret rotates.

This is a question that I also have a current interest in. Perhaps the Tank Museum knows the answer, if so, who to ask?

I doubt that the Tank Museum knows the current rotation speed of an Armortek Tiger fitted with lazysuzan dearing, this may be best directed at Armortek themselves though they may never have timed the rotation speed.

The real Tiger as we all know had power traverse which was dictated by engine RPM according to the handbook a full 360 rotation at tickover was 1 minute, the Tank Museum did a test on 131 if i remember this was 12 seconds over, a full speed test was never carried out for fear of damage in such an old vehicle. Panther at its quickest was 18 seconds some 3 seconds slower than Sherman, i would have to look up what Panther was on tickover .

Thanks Mark, at least someone read the question! Yes, I’m aware 131’s turret rotates around about 1 minute for a full 360, though I’m not sure 131 is a good example due the damage it received? The Tiger I was famous for a slow rotation rate however, and I am looking into slowing mine down. Watching videos of Armortek Tigers, it seems a bit fast, but not having got that far with mine I thought I’d ask.

Simon, I have never timed the turret on my 2017 Tiger 1, but for sure it will make a 360 in much less than 1 minute at full speed. The good thing is that I can turn it slowly (proportional channel with ESC) to make it more like the real thing.

Thanks Mark, the fact that the new motor (Motion Co 90 Degree Drive to tuck the motor out of the way) I have now fitted is geared to about half the Armortek motor speed to that would be no bad thing.

I'm with Vince on this, use the proportional control, sometimes having a bit more speed can get you out of trouble when needed. On new-ish transmitters you can limit top end speed by limiting "servo end point" position, this is obviously if you are using an ESC (electronic speed controller) to control traverse.
If you have the "Need for Speed" you could always add "more motors" like a certain enterprising chap has done with his Chieftain. I only hope he has labelled up his transmitter.
