Engine L60 for Chieftain

Post by Ivano Costantini »

Hi everyone,
iwas asked about the possibility of making the L60 engine. Thank you, I am flattered by the request. However, before accepting and starting the job, I want to make sure I can do it in the best possible way.
On the internet I found only photographs but no diagrams with measures to understand how this engine is made. I ask all of you if you have documentation that can help me understand the shape of the engine body and the various parts. I thank all those who want to give me information. Ivano

Fantastic news Ivano, I find your work truly excellent.

May I ask if in tandem, could you produce a version that could some how "cover" the installed R/C Armourtek motor/gearboxes. Allowing the engine deck covers to be lifted, it could show radiators, upper crank case and filter set and probably the top of the TN12 transmission. even the top end of the Donkey Gue engine.
I'm sure there'd be a lot of interest. 8)

Hi John,
maybe it's not a problem, but first I need to understand how the Hahahahahaha engine is made! I don't have much material and I don't even have a tank, if I accept the job it will be a good challenge!

Gaz untie or bless you Ivano, I'm not sure anyone actually knows how the L60 was actually made. Some say evil pixies built it with magic glitter dust, others think it was a German design just made better. Either way it does have special needs and your the man to do it.

I don't have a tank either, at the moment. Here's a couple pictures of the Mona lisa of engines, and the eternal question..........Why

I think it's also worth mentioning that Ivano has been in contact with David Byrden reference the L 60 engine, and has had a lengthy and productive discussion on the subject! How cool is that 8)

Interesting Phil. I thought David confined his expertise to all things Tiger.

First I've heard of David having expertise on Chieftain. Delighted if that's the case but it would be better to get Ivano data from primary sources. I'm on the case. Stephen

Excuse me, but maybe I was misunderstood, I only talked about Tiger1 with Mr. David Byrde. For L60 I managed to get in touch with Leylan Corporation, but I'm still not sure that they will want to collaborate with the information I asked for, I'm waiting!

Small selection of many photos I took at Bovington on Saturday.

I had one of these for many years, which I ripped off a condemned L60 pack in disgust and frustration after it had failed on my tank. I kept it until we moved last year, thinking it was rubbish. Wish I'd kept it now. Would have nailed it to my Armortek Chieftain.

The Tank Museum also has a TN12 on display but sadly no GUE.
