Interesting FAT photo 1943

Post by Stephen White »

Interesting photo from an unusual angle, showing the air recognition roundels:

The IWM caption says: 25-pdr field guns and 'Quad' artillery tractors parade past Winston Churchill during his visit to Tripoli to thank the 8th Army for its success in the North African campaign, 4 February 1943

The photo recently appeared on Missing Lynx with comments about the lack of turntables, probably left off just for the parade. 8th Army Gunners had the excuse of being too operationally busy to care much about parade dressing by the right.

The photo was taken in Martyrs' Square, in the centre of the Libyan capital, Tripoli. I photographed the exact spot where Churchill and Monty stood a few years ago, when "the Great Leader" was presiding over the country.

This is the direction in which the parade was heading:

Great photos Stephen - thanks for posting them :D

I wonder why the roof of the closest Quad looks to be lighter in colour than the other three. Just a difference in the age of the covering material ?

The ones on either side seem to have sand channels hanging from the side.

Adrian.
