501st ss king tiger

Post by Nigel Cooper »

hi all.
just finished painting KT as 312 of 3rd company 501st with blue and yellow numbers.
I used a paint mask with good result but on the same sheet is a badge to go on front of tank which is cross keys in a shield over oak leaves
the same as 101st.
I know 501st use a crouching tiger but do they both share the same badge.
cant find anything on web. hope somebody knows.
thanks

Nigeria you are confusing s.Pz.Abt501 which was renumbered this had the crouching Tiger emblem with s.SS.Pz.Abt 101 which was later renumbered s.SS.Pz.Abt 501 this Abteilung always had the crossed keys with oak leaf

Nigel, you have to be careful here to distinguish between the Wehrmacht units and SS. The "crossed keys" insignia was indeed used by SS Panzerabteilung 501, which was reconstituted from SS Pz Abt 101 after Normandy. More here:

The "crouching tiger" insignia was used by a different unit, the Wehrmacht battalion Schwere Panzerabteilung 501. More here:

There is also reference in Scheider, Tigers in Combat vol 1 but unfortunately, the vital page (6) is missing from my copy.
