Me Quad.

Post by Phil Woollard »

Well I now have a Quad to play with, I have started with all the essential mods that have already been covered on the morris quad threads (very helpful) I am now adding my own fixes to sort out the things I have found that are not quite right, like the dry bearings in the gearbox which have seized solid causing all kinds of faults from fuses blowing to no mechanical drive.( ironic really as this quad has done no miles at all)!
I have not only used high quality grease on the dry gears and bearing but have added a remotely fed total loss light oil bath for the differentials and will add another to the gear reduction/transfer box also. (total loss at the moment as I have not used gaskets on the diff assemblies as yet) The diff's are leaking oil just like the real thing. I will also add an oil top up level plug so that just a very small amount of oil sits in the bottom of the diff case and so reduce any over filling and any oil travelling down the half shafts.
You guy's are going to think I have lost the plot but it works a treat!
An observation, the angle of the motor/gearbox needs to be carefully aligned (rotated on it's six bolts) before tightening so that the UJ's are not able to pop out there housings as the vehicle traverses uneven ground.
All in all a very enjoyable day of getting to know the Morris Quad.
Please note these are my fixes and are not necessary for the average build.
Phil.

Polished UJ's are lightly greased, these will need cleaning and regreasing on a regular basis to keep any contaminated grease causing wear to a minimum, which in my book is no big deal.

If you look closely you can see the oil on it's way down the tube to the rear differential. Note the oil drip at the bottom of the diff.

And the same for the front diff also.

My plans for the Quad, limber and 25 pounder.
I am methodically working through the electrics installing the correct cross sectional wiring and adding a convenient automotive spade fuse box, which will protect all those vulnerable expensive Armortek modules ( by far the best control systems on the market I hasten to add ). A convenient master switch hidden under the rear off side fender , with a smoker isolation switch close by, I love Micks smoker and exhaust pipe installation, so I will replicate that!
The mechanical issues are now in the bag and she runs great, my oilers will mean that those components will last a life time. Access to the chassis and electronics will be simply two bolts and lift the whole body away, I will enclose the motion pack in plasticard (creating and inner box), this not only insulates the myriad connections but will also help the body slip over easily when being removed or replaced for maintenance.
I plan to add one of my animatronic driver figures (he is on his way from the Philippines) his head will turn in the direction of travel along with the steering wheel which will do the same, his arms and torso will follow nicely (although he will need Velcroing to the seat or the unwanted movement will look ridiculous)
I have a dummy engine to install over the motor, so the bonnet will need to be hinged. the speaker will become the radiator shroud and fan.

The Quad is for sale, so if a potential customer would like the Quad, limber and gun ( with radio gear all set up and running), either part built or built please let me know at any point of the build by PM ( email is ok but I need to know it's been sent so I can check the junk inbox  )

Well lots to do so I better get on with it, photos of the progress as it happens........Phil.

So I have fitted a wire rope drum spring thingy to keep the rope in place while it's fed in and let out, once painted it will blend in.

I have now cut the solid bonnet into its 4 panels and have added piano hinge to make them functional.

I have cut a good 50mm of the firewall away ready for the dummy engine, the firewall is much closer to the original now. The electric motor is basically the same dimensions as the engine (but lower) and clutch housing and will disappear under the transmission tunnel nicely.

The bottom of the engine will have to be fitted to the radius of the motor, I can't hide the electric motor but I can lose most of it.

Hello Phil, I like your lateral thinking.....or should that be 'out of the box'. I really enjoyed my Quad build it's a chunky little bugger. I'm presently fitting the bits and pieces on my Panther. You are so right about the weather, my garage is brass monkeys. We could do with a few more 'builds on the Forum.....Mick

Hello Phil, sorry mate no engine bay Quad details. All my Armortek model builds are very much standard out of the box. It's a model, I build it, and that's that. I do envy all you guys who take the trouble to reference and research their tank builds etc,. It must make the effort far more interesting, all that detail.
I can appreciate the time and effort it takes. Me....wrong end of life  I'm like Mugabe, I keep falling asleep :( Keep posting Phil...best wishes, Mick.

I have ordered and am waiting for a nice little 24v motor and gearbox from Ireland, the final rpm is around 400 which should be fine for the radiator fan and bottom pulley, I don't want to shake the thing to pieces.

The radiator fan motor will be wired in parallel with the main motor for now and so will be proportionate to the engine speed and sound.

A little more to the Quad. I have been asked (by a very nice man) "was the engine printed " the answer is no it's all plasticard and lots of fiddly filing and cutting, lots more to do before I am happy with it.

Great work Phil, good to see builds like yours, all too rare on the Forum. “A wise man learns from his mistakes but a wiser one steals other peoples’s good ideas....” I’ve learnt a lot for seeing others’ work here.

Thanks.

Stephen
