Old style smoke unit retain heating element

Hello,
At the moment the heating element is just held in by jamming it into the brass tube. Am I missing some way to make sure it definitely doesn't come loose? Seems like it could cause a lot of damage it comes out.
Cheers
Sam

Hi Sam,
It may help if you specify exactly what you mean by "old".
Mine is 2009 and does not match your description in any way.

No. Most people rely on the stiffness of the cable and the cable route itself to keep the element in place.

Yes. They run at about 500°c in free air, if memory serves.
Adrian.

Thanks Adrian - I'll try and cobble something together then. I've also blown a few fuses with the connections to the element fusing on the brass tube.
Sorry Mark - I should have posted a picture really.

Sam, there is a way to secure the smoker heating element. Wrap some insulating tape around the cable just behind the element to protect it. Then take some soft wire, wrap a couple of turns around the cable and then take the two ends around either side of the smoker box and secure at the opposite end. I've also filed indents into the smoker box at the corners to ensure that the securing wire doesn't slip. Works a treat. If your element does become insecure, the first you'll know about it is probably a slight leakage of fliuid onto the hull floor. Checking for leaks should be part of your routine service checks. I have tried cable ties but they're not as effective as wire.

Thanks Stephen,
That sounds a very elegant solution. Will have to work on my "knitting" to make it look tidy.
