Motor spind, but sprocket doesnt move

Post by Steen Vøler »

Hi all
Driving my tiger today with no problems until suddenly the left motor stopped being able to spin the sprocket.

Motor gives sound and i can see the moving part inside the motor with the cobber stuf spinning.

Checked the sprocket was firmly fitted with the pin and this was not the problem.

Could it be the gear part on the motor that is loose ? Or something complety else.

I have not taken the motor out yet - would like to hear some advice first before getting into this
cheers
Steen

Two possibilities spring to mind.

With the very earliest kits, the main drive gear was in two parts, with a separate shaft and gear. These can fail so that the motor drives the gear round but the shaft doesn't move.

Also, the spur gear inside the gearboxes on the Parvalux PM motors is made of nylon and pushed onto a splined section of the drive shaft. If this is loaded too much the splines can strip the inside of the gear.

You will need to strip down that side to see what has happened.

Sounds like you need a new pair of driven gears

The part code you need to order from Monique is CE0302.

Before changing a motor or a gear it could be a good idea to find out why the unit got damaged to prevent an new one beeing damaged too...........

We had a new 'mission' on Eckersmühlen proving ground some days ago. At two AT - models the track links were broken, because the sand blocked the drive train and the track links leaved there guidance in the sprockets. Only steel track links are strong enough to withstand those loads. But such an overload could also damage a motor unit I suppose.
kind regards
Gerhard

Hi Steen,
Have you checked the taper lock inside the sprocket house? It's easily broken into two pieces, and may have caused the problem. My experience.
Have a checking, and good luck!

Hi Chang

Took everything apart last weekend and the problem was on the outergear.

The rod where the taperlock is installed, was spinning freely in the geatr itself.

With this problem you dont drive far :-)

So what will the fix to this challenge be. Well, I first cleaned out the stuff so both the rod and the gear was clean. Used strong green loctite to bond the rod to the gear.

Re-drilled the hole where the stop-rod was before and put a new in well dressed in loctite. Drilled another 2 holes 4mm in diameter to add further strongness to the rod. One was tabbed so that I could screw in a 4mm bolt and cut it in length being flat on the gear plate. The third was a soft metal pin.

So, now I have 3 strong lock points on the gear instead of the original 1.

What actually causes this issue is still not clear to me as the tigers not has been under heavy driving conditions, nor has there been anything that locled the sprocket/track.

Could just be a faulty stock unit. It was made in 2003 :.)
cheers

Ah, that explains why the gear and shaft come machined from one solid piece of steel these days...

Glad you found the problem and great that you have engineered a solution using the original parts :D :D :D
