SU76i - anyone know anything about this ?

Post by Chris Hall »

A friend of mine has just come back from a long working spell in Moscow, and has posted this to me via Facebook:

"I was trawling through some old files yesterday and I found this, taken by me in Victory Park in Moscow a few years back. Apparently, after the German surrender at Stalingrad, the Russians found themselves the proud owners of 300 or so rather dog-eared Panzer III tanks. This is what they did with them. These things were graced with the name of SU76i and apparently 200 of them were produced. I think that it is a safe bet that the remaining 100 were used for spares !"

Anyone know anything about this ? Looks like an interesting conversion if anyone's got a Panzer III and a T34/76 they were wondering what to do with .....

All the best,

Chris

How interesting, Chris. Can't add anything except to say that the SU designation stands for Samokhodnya Ustanovka which translates as self-propelled installation, obvious really. Stephen
