Tiger 1 hard target restoration ?

Post by Phil Woollard »

The old Tiger 1 has been brought up from the range to be used as a vehicle for the Bergepanther to recover in various scenarios.
I want to keep a lot of the battle damage as is, where possible, the near side has taken most of the hits considerably deforming the plates and top deck, the road wheels x8 are beyond repair on this side also..see pics

Scratch built engine hatch
Scratch built engine hatch
Some progress making new parts some of which have been blown up and never recovered, like the engine hatch which just disappeared after the internal demolition charge in the lake was just a bit to big
All of the bent and twisted parts were straightened and bolted back together!
I have used ali plate for the hatch and manufactured new hinges from loader vision scope castings with 3mm galvanised wire for the grab handles, I will ad more details as I go.

Crikey Mr Woollard that is a restoration and a half. I thought my slow restoration of 1331 and 311 was difficult enough but a walk in the park next to your task! Quality of these models does indeed shine through. 1331 stood for 4 years outside but after an hours tinkering with the electrickery it burst into life and ran round the garden. Didn't have to withstand live rounds though :D

Hi Peter, tis a labour of love that we do to be sure, I'm thinking about leaving the damaged side as is but I also want to restore it all at the same time, all that character would be lost..hundreds of hours and lots of expense to get it looking this rough, modelling battle damage is more difficult to achieve than any other effect, how should I portray the weld seams?
All good fun though regards Phil

We still have this old Tiger chassis and it's next on the list for some restoration, this is the Tiger being hit by aircraft cannon in the video.

I'm thinking about this quick fix for the missing early wheels, was this ever done in the field I wonder, I'm sure that I may have seen an old photo of maybe a single late wheel used in this way ?
