Hello Glen,

Welcome to this great forum :D
Your question hits a sore spot, because there are more ways to create zimmerit than there were tanks in WWII :? . Every builder has his own "secret" recipies and tools.
So if I start with my "what and how" you probably will get a list with better, superior, smarter etc. methods.
For big-scales I use a 2 component material called "Magic Sculp". It sticks very well to most surfaces, is very smooth and easy to work with. You don't have to hurry, because a little water will soften it again.
My magic tool is a piece of an old fret saw with the appropriate teeth spacing. Works like a dream, for me that is
Who is next ?

Hello Glen.
Its Milliput 2 part epoxy putty for me, done two complete Tigers so far and no probs, get the putty smoothed out over the surface it does not need to be perfectly smooth have alook at the real thing :) then i form the ridges with a scrap piece of metal mine is about 22mm across and 3mm thick i have chamfered the edges it seems to make life easier then the thin vertical line i do with an old knife. Top tip keep a small container of water handy to keep the tool wet and to help spread the Milliput.
Hope this helps. Paul

Mike Stannard sells tools for applying the Zimmerit. These vary so you can choose accordingly and end up with a result that looks authentic.

Tile cement also sticks well :) and has around 30 mins working time.

Hi Folks.
Tried tile adhesive for the rolled steel texture to some good effect and also messed with it for Zimmerit, the results wer O.K. and should still be available in the archive? if you try it be sure to use the powdered type floor tile adhesive and it needs to be flexible and the metal hull requires a good scuffing with oxide type sandpaper.
Just my two penny worth.
Cheers Paul

Hi ,
I need to zimmerit a Tiger and since I am familiarised with Milliput from my plastic model days,I thought that would be the material for me. I was wondering if any one knew approximately how many packets are required ?Thanks
Lionel

Please excuse my ignorance Glen, but what is P 38 and where can I get a can to give it a try? I am guessing that it is a car body filler. I look forwards to seeing pictures on how your Tiger turned out.

Hi Lionel, yes P38 is car body filler , you need to have a play first as you only have about 10 mins user time, but i did it in about 10" runs, if you email me i`ll take some pic s in the morning and send them too you. glen.brooks@btinternet.com
and i got it from a local garage, halfords etc also do it. hope it helps, glen

Cheers for all the advice.I think the answer is to try all three methods on a piece of scrap ally and see which one I get on with best.

Hello Glen.

I do the Zimmerit with Car Body Filler, the processing time is very short, only 4 - 8 minutes.
The tool is very easy, a old Wood saw blade , in several large pieces split.
Have a look at the Gallery -- Holger Hoffmann - Zimmerit & Painting.
