JagdPanther overhaul - Taperlock challange

so, I finally startet on my jagdpanther overhaul.

Over the last couple of days I have taken out all Electronics, marked everything up so that re-installing will be very easy.

My plan is to make shelfs for mounting it nice and structured with easy acces to future changes and enhancements.

Roadwheels and axles is also removed and only one small challenge is remaining.

I cant get the taperlock off the shaft on both drive sprockets.


I have removed both grub srews and use one grub screw to try to loosening the taper Lock system, but nothing happens. I will not turn the grub screw with to much force as it should go loose without to much force.
On the Picture you can see 2 X markings where the grub screws was installed and the AF maring is where the one grubscrew should go in to loos up the system.

What can I do to get the sprockets off?

Hello Steen.
We have had that problem here on built models we have not done .... try a large cap head bolt instead of the grub screw this allows you to apply a bit more force without worrying about getting a grub screw stuck .... if you are still struggling a sharp tap on the inner face of the sprocket can also break the hold of the taper lock ... when you have got them off plenty of grease when re fitting.

I found tapping the front of the sprocket with a rubber mallet on alternate sides eventually released the bush on the T-34.

When I'm removing a sprocket on a rebuild or for maintenance I like to use a gear puller for the extraction. The sprocket comes loose every time and both the sprocket, taper lock, and main drive axle are left intact.

Most of the time when the sprocket is removed from the axle the taper lock is still on the the sprocket via friction. A nice smack dead center via a rubber mallet works in dislodging it

All ball bearings is now removed from the road wheel's and is to be replaced.

Also worked some more with the interior painting.

Regarding the taper lock challenge I have ordered a gear puller aas it is still not getting off.

Steen,Looking really good... Your rebuild is turning out nicely. One more tip for the sprocket, you might also want to squirt some WD40 or penetrating oil into the taper lock / sprocket axle and let it sit there until the puller arrives, The extra lubrication will help with dissolving some of the corrosion and will aid in the removal.

Hi Steen

A gear puller should only be used as an absolute last resort. Try everything else first.
Use a cap head in the third hole of the taper lock and apply pressure, then firmly tap the face of the sprocket with a mallet. The suggestion to apply WD40 24hours before attempting this is a good one. A gear puller will pull the sprocket tighter onto the taper lock before dragging it off the shaft.

Hi everyone

Finally past the taperlock challenge. I had to use a gearpuller at last to get it Loose . The right side taperlock just went of with no problems.

The gear itself is just like new

The quality of this tank is just amazing You know - taken is apart and looking into the gear and its just like new is just fantastic.

I made a longer panel to mount the 4 x GEL batteries, evenly distributed on the floor panel and to avoid any equipment to get into contact with the torsion bars.

Also made a panel to be installed across the tank over the batteries, so the electronics and speakers along with other equipment will be mounted here. This will come in a later update.

Now the Works starts installing the torsionbars back into the tank, and to get the angle right for the JagdPanther to have the correct height.

Just a short update on the project

Torsionbars are now remounted as well as the drivesprockets and idler Wheels.

Next is to wait for the new ball bearing to arrive for the roadwheels
