Can anyone confirm what colour would be seen in areas of the hull and turret that have had the zimmerit chipped away or shot off, My understanding was that the hulls were primed in red oxide with the factory applied zimmerit over this but I have seen many models showing grey primer under the zim.
Any thoughts ?

Re: Hull colour ?
Not THAT question Steve!!! This ought to be a fun debate to watch.
From what I could tell from studying factory photographs while researching the same question is that you are correct. The zimmerit itself is a sort of warm grey, cement/concrete color. The dark yellow was painted as the tank was assembled so I'm sure there were variations, as to what sometimes happened in the factory. Again, this si only from studying black and white factory photos of the stages of production. So just my best guess.
Good luck Steve
Keep up the outstanding work!!

Re: Hull colour ?
Hi Tim.
I have seen photos of the Swiss KingTiger currently being restored and some of these show that when the wheels were removed original grey etch primer was visible, this got me thinking that the hull base colour must be this grey as there would be little point in applying etch primer over red oxide. Internally there is plenty of red oxide visible so is it possible that the hulls were not a uniform red oxide or grey etch primer but a combination of the two.

Hi Steve,
The grey you see on the Swiss KT is just bare metal from the sand blasting.
Kind regards
Kent

Re: Hull colour ?
They grey shown is from the zimmerite is self as it was a greyish kind of paste.
Per told me this was applyed after the re oxied paint or on the dunkelgelb depending on i wich shape the tank arrived.
Ive used humbrol paints to achive the same color scheme and used some layers to get the touch i want.
Sadly, i just havent got time. Nor the effort to finish her.
Might even go for a sale, if i cant put the hours in. Sad but true... i just dont have the ummmph to pull through though 85% well built
