I replaced my old dremel tool after almost 20 years with the dremel 4000.
The variable speed stopped working within a couple of weeks. Just permanent high speed. Bought through amazon so no problem getting a replacement within 30 days. The replacement has now developed exactly the same problem. Amazon now giving a full refund.
Think I will try a proxxon instead.

John - I'd second that. Although we talk about "dremels" as a general term, I've never used one. I've always used Proxxon tools. They're well made and although they may be a bit more expensive, they last. You can buy the appropriate collets to allow the Dremel tools to work.

I got an Dremel and a cheap Dremel derivate from the supermarket for about 25€.
The Dremel is not bad but I only bought it becuase I was in need of the 90 degree
head. The cheap one is running for over 8 years without any problems. The Dremel
I only use, when I need the special head. Another colleque has the same problem
with Dremel like you, since he only uses the cheap derivates of the Dremel, he
runs without any problems.
If there is a problem after two years, I have no moral problems to put the 25€
in the trash.

Ordered a Proxxon IB/E.
Both dremel 4000 lasted just a few hours use. I was very gentle with the second one. No overheating issues. Just lost variable speed. Runs on max. Amazon giving full refund.
I have a couple of cheap drills also for general stuff.

Just thought I would mention it herr in case anybody thinking of replacing their old dremel. There are a few bad reviews on the latest dremel drills.

I also use Dremel, i workt with my Dremel on my 2 tanks and have no problems.

luck of the draw i think, my two dremels have been hammered and still going strong, on my sixth tank, but never let them get too hot, they are the mid range model, regards simon manning.

My previous dremel was the basic model. No frills. Started to overheat a bit towards the end but lasted 20 years plus. The new 4000 models did'nt get near a tank and two giving problems within weeks. No overheating problems but in both cases speedcontrol failed. Motors still running strong but at constant top speed. I need mainly low speed.

If you have the older model, look afted it. I buried my old one in the garden. I might did it up and see if I can fix it.

Got my new proxxon. Very nice. Very Very quiet. Great for late night work. Very smooth and low vibration. Does not come with many attachments but the attachments included are high quality.

Im thinking of getting one. At the moment i use mark 1 elbow grease
