G'day All,

Is anyone else having problems lining up the turret lid holes with the brackets?

I've re-drilled the rear lug. Also are others experiencing gap around the turret lid?

I may not have the lid sitting correctly.

Yes mate, my lid does not line up with any holes at all. However i plan on either putting hinges or magnets on it so i can access the workings so it doesn t really matter to me.

I also had a big gap round the turret lid. see my post bedroom build on how i fixed it. Also most people put welds round the top which will cover that gap (See Phil's tiger post)

There is a smsll gap. Bob's post has a solution to redu će the gap. My turret top is not screwed down as I want easy access and it odeš not move when the tank is driving.

Like Bob said I used the Weld to hide the gap,I think John did aswell.
A bit of thin sticky tape to mask the Turret Lid and stop the milliput
sticking to it and holds the lid reasonably tight.
The hairline gap is hardly noticable when the tape is removed and gets even better
with the painting.
I adjusted the Lid screw blocks at the side and rear with washers,bouth inwards and up
a bit at the rear.
I filled the 2 front holes and left my options open with the 2 side ones and the rear.
If I am happy I can fill those later.
The weld overlaps the Turret walls a bit at the widest gaps but is still quite strong
with some care and easy to repair if you slip up.

I carved a channel on the top of the front gun mount plate with a wood chissle to bring the front of the turret lid down and get an even rise and close the vertical gap

When I get home from work I wiil get the size for you that the Turret Roof was
sunk in a bit,from my books.
That was a crafty solution on the front Bob,to sink your front part in

Thanks Phil. Everyday is a school day for us building this bugger. Its great we have the forums to share what we learn.

I believe the protrusion was 15mm, the amount of the increase in armour thickness. Cutting the channel means the frontal lid is virtually flush at the mantlet end which fits with my understanding of the historic late tiger, and the reason armortek cut a groove in the front lid.

Yes you are right Bob,in the book"Germany's Tiger Tanks D.W. to Tiger1"
Design Production and Modifications.
it says Late March 1944 the Turret top was increesed to 40mm and 15mm sticking out
af the Turret sides and the drawing looks flush at the front except for the weld,
and 15mm sticking up at the back.

You could disguise it with the height and thickness of your welds to make it look lower
at the front and if its too high at the fold in the turret top,if you didnt want to
have a go at a grouve like Bob.
Forgot to say last time Ray you have done a good job on the Zimmerit.

These pictures should help you, they are from the Panzerbasics CD's which have around a 1000 pictures of the Tiger 1 and a 1000 of the Tiger 2. Exterior and interior detail. I use them all the time as reference. Price is around $50.00, well worth it.

The zimmerit there is most likely not original. Some good ideas here on the roof fitting.

It got me wondering and I can't quite tell from the angle of the photos, is there two pieces making up that turret roof? I can't make out a weld seam in front of the cupola.

I'm not sure if all late tigers were a two piece turret roof, or if they had a mix of both one and two. Anyone know this little fact?

Sure I can see a weld in the first picture.

Yes John,I think after another look I can see a Green line in amogst the dust
which could be the weld.

Thanks for that Link,it confirms the second picture that the plat sticks up a bit
and then the weld,but the good bit was the tolerance aswell.
