Hi Guys

I have been working on this corrugated iron for about 18 months and at last have some samples made. My aim was to be able to offer it for those that may want to build a Nissen/Quonset Hut. The original Nissen Hut was used extensively during WW2 as quarters on airfields and over 40,000 of them were built to house troops for the D Day landings. It is an icon of WW2 Britain and became a well known housing in the US after the war under the Quonset Hut name. The Nissen hut was first used in WW1 for cheap, quick, effective troop housing and was invented by Lt. Col. Peter Norman Nissen of the British Royal Engineers, hence the name. To cut a long story short a team of US personal were directed to design quick housing to be used at Quonset Point navel yard and to use the Nissen Hut design as a basis to start from, hence the name Quonset Hut in the US. For the full story check out, "Quonset Hut" Metal Living For The Modern Age by Julie Decker and Chris Chiei.

As stated, I first thought of making the corrugated iron for the purpose of building 6 scale Nissen Huts however there are many uses for corrugated iron in the hobby and I am sure many of you will think of ideas that I have not.

The samples shown here are made of .030" styrene, which is a little to brittle for my liking and the final production parts will be made of .020" to 030" ABS plastic. These samples were vac-formed from the wood masters, to put them into production requires proper high strength, heat resistant resin tooling to be made which is expensive. With this in mind and not wanting to go to this expense without first testing the market I am offering these two types of 6 scale corrugated sheets at a pre-production price.

Firstly I will cover the two types of corrugated sheets and then deal with the Nissen/Quonset Hut.

The curved corrugated sheet is 20.5" long by 6" wide in its uncut vac formed shape, actual 6 scaled sheets require for the huts is 20" x 5" (10' x 2.5' in real size), I made these oversized to allow for cutting.

The flat sheets are 13" long by 5.25" wide in its uncut vac formed shape, actual 6 scaled sheets are 12" x 2.5" (6' x 2.5' in real size)-, once again made oversize for cutting.

Both sheets will be sold in their vac form shape, you do the cutting.

CS001 Curved Corrugated Sheet (Cut Size 20" x 5") Price $17.50
CS001-8 Curved Corrugated Sheet (Cut Size 20" x 5") x 8 Price $120.00

The Nissen/Quonset Hut, the standard hut was 16 feet wide by 36 feet long ( 2.6' x 6' in 6 scale), many other sizes were produced. I am basing my offering on the standard size. There were several types of bulkheads used for the huts, prefabricated wood panels, brick, wood slates, wood stud work covered with flat corrugated sheets to name a few. Most have a standard single door and two windows at both ends. With all these choices it gives the builder the opportunity to customize his to his own liking. See pictures of a few samples below. I plan on offering the complete hut as a kit for those with the pocket book and space to house it. I will also be offering end units for those that would like to use it for dioramas and for some were to put your treasures to bed. LOL. These end units will consist of the bulkhead with windows and door and a 12" sections of the hut. These section can be added to increase the size of your hut at a later date. I will also be making beds and furniture for the interior. The pictures below are a simple mock up of an end section so you can see the size and use of the corrugated sheets.
I have made no decision on what bulkhead type I will make as part of the kit, the hut frame work will be made of photo-etched brass as close to the real thing as I can make it and it will be a bolt together construction just like the real one. Each 12" section will require 8 curved sheets, 2 sheets need cutting in half, two 12" sections require 15 curved sheets and a complete hut require 45 sheets. The interior skin of the hut requires 12 flat sheets per section.
I have no pricing for the complete hut or sections, but would like to hear from you if you might be interested. The kits will not be available for at least six months.
