Dave's King Tiger!

Post by Paul Morris »

Hi Fellas.

Zimmer and paint on Daves King Tiger.

No build shots this time as the tank came more or less built and primed ready to go really just the odd bits to complete.
[Imageimg][/img]
Milliput Zimm going on first after scuffing and scoring the primed surface I prefer to apply the Milliput straight onto the metal surface where possible but the tank has been well primed by Dave.
[Imageimg][/img]
Exhaust stacks removed for easy access to rear plate
[Imageimg][/img]
[Imageimg][/img]
Once the Milliput has dried I remove the side skirts again ready for texture and black primer goes on, this area like all the others will have a dirty muddy appearance that will show if the skirts are removed for running,
[Imageimg][/img]
Once again some areas of Zimm are missing to show weld lines underneath, this is the effect I have used on all the Tigers I have done to date some of you will have seen this on Paul Will's and my own tanks at the open day last year.
More to follow...soon Dave I promise.
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul.

Nice job on the zimmerit. Do you roll out the Millport first in sheets or apply with a scraper? Will you be adding more pictures on this jog as you go along?
I like the use of black primer below skirts.

Hi John.

No mate I don't roll out the Milliput first I just mix it up and then spread it onto the surface of the model with my thumbs...and yes it does make them ache eh Lee :D .

Well a bit more progress on Daves tank this week.
[Imageimg][/img]
Got all the dark areas done and hull zimm finished off, as I said before I took the exhaust stacks off and they have now been coated with "Scenic rust" as norm.
[Imageimg][/img]
Time to start getting a bit of colour on the wheels now.
[Imageimg][/img]
[Imageimg][/img]
Now the side skirts can go back on and a start can be made on the deck and turret...
Cheers Paul

Hi Fellas.

Bit more done on Daves King Tiger.
Texture added to the deck area, and mesh screens made up and fitted and the side skirts are back on the tank now.
[Imageimg][/img]
[Imageimg][/img]
Next jobs M.G. movement and tool clamps to go on.
[Imageimg][/img]
I did away with the hinged turret roof that had been fitted to this tank as when the roof was lifted the paint was being damaged on the top edge of the rear plate of the turret and so would the zimmerit so the mid and rear sections are now fixed with the front left to simply lift off for access the guns working parts.
[Imageimg][/img]
This photo shows angle strips fitted around the opening section.
[Imageimg][/img]
Then good access from the opening section.
[Imageimg][/img]
Then welds going on ...sorry bad picture.
[Imageimg][/img]
Then zimmed and primed ready for colour.
More to follow. Cheers Paul

Hi Fellas.
Thanks Tim, bit more progress on Dave's King Tiger
[Imageimg][/img]
First couple of pictures show the tank with the basic camo pattern laid out.
[Imageimg][/img]
I don't normally use Tamiya paints on the big models and I was a bit put off by the see through camo pattern.
[Imageimg][/img]
So I went over all the green and brown with a few more coats to make it all nice and solid
[Imageimg][/img]
Adding the various tools and ropes as we go.
[Imageimg][/img]
Here the tank is starting to take on its final appearance with an enamel and turps wash over everything.
[Imageimg][/img]
[Imageimg][/img]
Next job get the charging knight on the side.
[Imageimg][/img]
And with this done weathing streaks etc can go on.
[Imageimg][/img]
[Imageimg][/img]
Almost there now.
[Imageimg][/img]
A bit of a more substantial hit on the rear corner of the turret but nothing our K.T. cannot handle :D
[Imageimg]
All over bar the shouting I will take a final couple of pictures when she is outside in the daylight.
By for now.
Cheers Paul

Hi Paul,

Great work, I especially like the weathering on the roadwheels. How did you do the charging knight - do please tell.

I´m also curiuos about that turntable you have, a nice thing to have when handling the model during modelling/painting - can you post some photos?

Regards,

Per

Hello Per.

Thanks for your comments. The charging knight was scaled up on a scanner from the decal set in a Tamiya King Tiger, I just kept increasing the size a little untill it looked about right or similar to wartime photo's of the real thing...I must tell you however that even though this is now the third charging knight I have done it was "Robin Hinson" a fellow builder on this forum who did his knight, a green one before I did and he told me how he had done it and I did the same.
Once you have the knight the right size I just traced it out and and transferred it to the turret side and then painted it in by hand.

The turn table is the lazy Suzan bearing type although its quite good because it is actually sold as the bearing for a swivel seat on a fishing boat :D so it will quite happily carry 20 stones of weight, I have a smaller one too that I sit on blocks for painting the turrets.
When Daves Tank is gone I will indeed take some pictures.

Introducing "Gertrude"

Post by Paul Morris »

Hi Fellas.

Thanks for your comments most welcome :D .
Just a couple of messing about shots from this afternoon, after I put the number on and did the final bit of weathering a bit of gun smoke and exhaust fume stains.
[Imageimg][/img]
The crew from another tank turned up {thats right Dave you don't get the figures} and Christened her "Gertrude"
[Imageimg][/img]
I looked up the name on the net and it said its an old Germanic name meaning "strong spear" which I thought was kind of appropriate.
[Imageimg][/img]
So thats nearly it for this job I will as I said take another shot as she goes out into the sunlight.
[Imageimg][/img]
I will get this round to you this week Dave then.....its Panther time.
Cheers and thanks for looking Paul and Vinnie

Hi John.

Yes bit of a first for me Tamiya acrylics and then Humbrol enamel / thinner washes over the top. I mostly just go for the Humbrol straight through.
